I agree. But it turned up in q quest for solid-state sending units for the raspberry pi and I thought it might provoke and idea or two about monitoring fluid levels. (see etape http://www.milonetech.com/About_eTape.php

That is interesting, but like Keith said, eewwwwww, and it also seems like a ludicrous amount of work and expense when I'm sure you could find a stock replacement gauge if you looked hard enough. Even if you couldn't find a stock gauge, I would rather leave the nice looking but not working stock gauge in the dash and hide a second working gauge somewhere else.

The eTape looks really cool... video shows the output as darn close to linear as you can get.
However it has a vent at the top and it appears that it can't be submerged or continuously sloshed over by the liquid, so I don't know if it would work for a mobile application.

I've contacted them re gasoline/ethanol resistant models. Maybe I'll get a
lead from them even if their etape products won't work.

I see it says in "water and water based non corrosive liquids"

From the description, sounds like its made using a PCB board with a resistive coating inside a flexible plastic housing. The liquid presses the plastic housing against the PCB making contact.

Gasoline and alcohol is likely to break it down in short order.

Yeah, I don't think this is the product but they are part being sold as part of the raspberry pi related items and the vendors and users there tend to be open to pointing customers to competitive products. At best, they might have a product in the pipeline but -if not- maybe some pointers about ss sending unit possibilities.
