Well somebody decided not to yield and crashed into the side of my 85 grand wagoneer. Did some pretty significant damage.
they have admitted at fault, and now it is time to come up with a number.
It is progressive Insurance, and after 3 days, the estimator called me back, and told me he still has not come up with any numbers. he admitted to me that right now he is clueless.
His numbers are $500 up to $30,000.
if you look it up on NADA, it comes up as $9500 on the low end, to 26k on the high end.
84 and 85 Grand wagoneers are unique, being they have old style dash, yet they are fully equipped with all options, in 86 they changed the dash and grill. Those years are more common.
anybody in our collective ever dealt with appraisals or such for insurance purposes? any ideas for me?
I have searched ebay and craigslist, and some jeep forums. I just cannot come up with much or any 84, 85 years in the correct shape.
My jeep looked good from 20 feet. But it ran and drives and everything works 100%. Paint is oxidized bad, and there is some rust on the very rear quarter panels. The rest of the jeep is solid with no rust.

just thought I would toss this out there to the group to see if there was any ideas. in our GMC world we have the Jims that can do appraisals, and I am sure we all deal with the same deal of knowing what it would cost to replace what we have already in our old rigs.

that is a good listing. there are a couple 85's on that list. There are some key things to bring the worth up.
to the right person in the right condition, same as our GMC's they are worth Money to someone who wants one and knows what they are buying. Just like our GMC's. you can put alot of money in making that jeep "like new" in reliability. My Jeep is to that point. The last thing for the refurbishing was to do the exterior.

Two thoughts. First, the Hagerty article refers to the 'Chrysler 340 engine". I have to wonder about that. The 340 LA engine was onl;y built as a high output unit, with production ending in 72 - I had one of the last of the 340 cars. Did they really stuiff it in an SJ? Even stock in '72, output was somewhat above 144hp.
Second, if yours is repairable for less than the adjustor's top number of 30 Large, why not tell him, "Let's just take it to soandso and let them fix it on your dime". Offer to forego your sore nechj and aching back if necessary.

When Sue's Civic got sandwiched we did an internet search for the same vehicle for sale in a 200 mile radius. The other guy's insurance wanted to give us trade in value. It was not our choice to trade nor did we have a trade in and needed to buy outright. After that was pointed out we settled for an average price of what was found on the radius search. Didn't want to take the beating on trade in and dealer markup on a replacement. You also get an opportunity to pay sales tax and all of the tag changes. in the Grand Wagoneer, they never changed much. It still had the AMC 360, and in some rare cases, 258 inline 6. up to 91, when was the last year they produced them. Chrysler decided to discontinue the Grand Wagoneer.
Chrysler owned jeep after 87.
you seen some changes, like the ignition key change from a GM key to a Chrysler key sometime after 87
I am no historian. so my records are not exact.
as for the Wrangler, AMC went from CJ5 and CJ7 to wrangler in 87. I had one of those. they still put the 258 (4.2) in them from what I think 87 to 90. 91 the jeep wranger had the 4.0, until very recently.
I think that is the same with xj cherokees. but I do believe that there was a 4.0, that was an AMC design, and I think when it went to a 4.0 HO engine, that indicated the newer chrysler engine.
but all I know is any Grand Wagoneer had the AMC 360, and in some cases the 258 inline 6.

I have been down the road before in some situations with the insurance companies. I also have some help from some American Family adjusters, they are working with me as well.
My problem with the 85 Grand Wagoneer, is I have found less then 6 that are even for sale, Nation wide.
now there is a nice one down in Arizona, but how do you compare that to one that is local to MN. they rust out and are all gone up here. and I think it would cost $1000-$2000 to import one to MN, from a non rusted state that might have a few more around.
86 to 91 Jeeps I can find, in comparable shape. But those are different vehicles, both the complete dash, A/C, and such, as well as the grill are different. and steering wheel.
I have some good information together to send the guy in the morning. I will let you know how it turns out for me. I finally had time to really look at my wagoneer, I think he is off on the damage, to me it is repairable, not a total loss situation.

Thanks for the info.
The youngest boy's 16th birthday is coming up in January and he wants a Jeep. The pre-Chryslerized ones might be something I would consider buying if the CFO will approve one that old.

Be prepared to pay a lot for the older CJ5 and CJ7. Some are selling for $5000.
