Thought I'd put up some pics of the garage I'm building for The Murray (GMC) and Kubby (Kubota tractor).
They started Tuesday and had the footings finished Wednesday. I got here after dark Friday and the foundation walls are done too. I'll get some pics when it gets light this morning.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g6483-the-murray-gets-a-home.html

We had 3/4 acre at the old house which we loved, but with 1700 ft of septic line, there was no place to build anything... nor could you get a driveway to the backyard. We found this place with 2.5 acres of bush but haven't sold the old place yet so we are living in both places. Anyone interested in a large bungalow with a 1500 sq ft rec room, hot tub, and wet bar.. and large 4 season room with in-floor heat!
Cool

Looks like a beautiful spot Bruce! I can't get over seeing footings from up north. Down here, we just pour a slab on top of the ground. Normally 8" thick around the edges 16" in with 4" of gravel below plastic in the middle. Sometimes thicker if it's going to have a heavy load.

Kinda threw me for a loop when I saw that you're building below ground
level -- then I remembered that y'all have to worry about the frost line up
there.

Where's the pit going to be? There IS going to be one, eh? I was hoping
to see a hillside so you could have a non-claustrophobic rack similar to
mine, but you'll just have to live with a pit. :-)

Yes, 4ft below ground for footings here. I was hoping to do a floating pad but the municipality would not allow it.

Ken, no pits allowed, that I could afford anyway, too many regulations, big insurance costs, pretty much illegal.

Its high enough inside for a lift... well about 3 ft clearance so a short lift... maybe someday.

So do that fill in between the footing walls with compacted dirt or gravel? Seems like with that much fill, there would be settling issues which would leave the slab unsupported and prone to cracking. That said, this is no doubt common practice up there and I'm just curious as to how it is done.

Thanks for sharing the pictures Bruce. Just having the GMC inside so it can be worked on during winter is great. My brother will share his nice big shop with me when it is real cold but having a space to keep it inside all winter would be so much nicer. Hope Teri and I can see your place in person.

I did a 30x36 garage floor all in one piece with no cut marks, using 4500# concrete with fibreglass strands in it. 20 years later it still has no cracks. With the GMC at 12,000 lbs, I would go at least 6" thick on that side of the garage.

Yes, it will be back filled and compacted. They leave as much undisturbed in the center to reduce the amount to be back filled and compacted. I was thinking they might have came back this morning and back-filled as they are calling for 15-20cm of snow this weekend.
At this time of year they will not pour the floor until the garage is up and closed in so they can get some heat in there.
I'm doing in-floor heat for the minimum heat level, with a space heater for quick warmups so it should be nice to work in the winter.

Hi Bruce;

Looked at the pics - is this a winter works project?

I saw on one where you said the door opening 8 x 9 ft. _ Have a close look
at the finished width - allowing for trim, etc. then remeasure your coach
width including the furtherest point being the mirrors. Your foundation
can be narrower but suggest a 9 ft wide door minimum. and 10 ft high min.

best regards

Dwayne,
That door is for the Kubby (Kubota estate tractor). I tried to upload a pic of the opening for the GMC (12 x12 door) but its on my cell phone and fails to upload.

Harry, this garage will be 35x 36. I wanted 35x40 but with height restrictions and truss limitations and my so called minimal budget, that's what I can get. They are doing 6" on the whole floor.

Cool

There's nothing like having your GMC very close to home. You can puttz on it whenever you feel like it, have the right tools handy, escape to it, look at something when you want to, etc. Since I moved to AZ, my coach is about 2 miles away. Sometimes I forget the keys, the right tool, the right beverage, etc. I guess you can tell I'm jealous !

I have my GMC inside. The garage door is 9' wide, I wish I had gone to 10' wide. 9' is just too narrow. I have to reverse very carefully and when the rear view mirrors are near the door opening, I have to fold them in. Not nice.

When I built my shop, I wanted to put in 2 ea. 10 foot wide x 10 foot high
roll up doors. But, because of the 16 foot height of the walls, the County
Zoning required a wall shear strength greater than what was provided by the
door formers, even if they were .250" wall thickness steel tube sections
from which the doors were supported. So, I modified the plans to include
only one 10 foot wide door. The county again refused to approve the
opening, said it had to be less than 10' wide. Sooo, I am stuck with a door
opening that is so narrow than when I have a coach with the full size ramco
mirrors with the ramco arms, I have to fold, and in one case remove the
mirror mount to enter my shop. What a PITA that is. Bruce, if you can, make
the Coach door as wide as they allow in Ontario. You will not regret it.

No worries guys, the door for the GMC is 12 feet wide by 12 feet high.

The 9 foot door is for the lawn tractor side/

Bruce,

Well your Mrs. will know where to find you during the winter! ;-)

Would it have been possible to deepen the footings to make a basement under the garage? That would have made a huge area for machine
tools?

I thought about that this morning.

Then I remembered a friend who did an addition with a wine cellar under part of the 3 car garage. The poured concrete floor had to be engineered and certified as built by the Engineer. That wine cellar cost him a few more dollars than the BMW parked above it!
