Just replaced our 307 FD with a 370 and find the 370 makes a loud whine when decelerating.
Anyone else have this problem or is it not a problem?

Our coach is generally really quiet inside and I have never noticed any sort of gear whine from the 3.70 limited slip final drive.

I had heard there were issues with some of the early 3.55 units though, but never heard of a problem with a 3.70.

Hi,
We put in one of JimK's 3:55's and it was a bit whiney off the gas but it
has since quieted down a lot. I have heard that the 3:70's are pretty quiet.

Thanks,

If we did the final drive, Call us
We know more about this than people on the net.
If it does not quiet down, then more than likely, it was not set up properly .
If we did the assembly, we will send you another one at our expense and will reimburse you for the labor to R & R and all freight.

My first 3:55 FD in use for over five years was quiet. The pinion bearing disintegrated on that unit.

The warranty replacement 3:55 FD has whined on deceleration since I installed it. The new ring and pinion gears didn't appear to be lapped in. I assume the first unit was lapped in but JimK installed it so I don’t know.

JimK advised me to keep driving and monitor the noise level. I only have about 1500 miles on it so far.

I intend to change the non synthetic FD oil every 1500 miles until the gears are broken in and the noise subsides.

The whining noise on deceleration seems to be improving toward what I hope will be satisfactory and not require replacement.

Replace it. The pinion depth is not set correctly and the noise will only
get louder.

For the first year our 3.70 had a little whine when decelerating, it went away and is fine now.

All or gears are lapped in at the factory, but sometimes the location is not always possible to match.
The factory tells us that each batch is identical.
I have outright told them that they are full of Sh t.
We have over 3,000 units running, so we have considerable history.
I hate to advise people to drive it with the whine for 1500-2000, but our last 2 batch sings on coast.
We have 2 locations that set our gears, they know what they are doing, so I will be on the manufacture again.
In the service manual, they mention that there will be noise.
Most of us have coaches that have over 50,000 miles on the gears, so never experienced noise.
When I was working for Ford, we authorize few replacement when they could not be adjusted out.
If any one that have acquired final drive fron us that is continuing to make noise , contact us for free replacement.

Final drive noise is a tough tough issue. After hundreds of millions of cars and trucks, the OEM's still have issues as well.

Mine makes no noise under load or cruise and the noise on decel seems to be going away after about 1k miles. The locking action seems better now than when new as well. It wasn't a bad noise anyway. I kind of liked it :/

My brother has a 3:70 in his Palm Beach and I have one in the
Stretch. They are both noisy, but not bad enough that either of us
would want to swap it out for another. The benefits outway this little
problem. You get use to it after awhile. One of the better upgrades
for both of us.

We replaced our OEM FD in our 77 Kingsley about 2 months ago with Jim K's 3.70 and limited slip but have only had the opportunity to drive it about 150 miles so far. It does whine upon deceleration but not that bad. We're assuming it's not an indication it's a bad FD or bad install and hopefully we're not ruining something by driving it. It's in storage for the winter and we'll put more miles on it in the spring. So far we like the performance difference it has provided.

Ours is a hot rod with lots of mods. The more noise the better. 40,000 miles on our 355. Sometimes I hear a little whine when I let up on the throttle, sometimes I don't. Just have never worried about it. I did have to have a bearing replaced at about 30 k. Where the drivers shaft goes in.
Keep the towing insurance paid and drive that thing.

Always use the regular lub for the first 2,000 miles, then go synthetic.
We supply several units a month, so we need input so we can do a better job of assembly and give feedback to our gear manufacture.
We do not hesitate to replace units when a customer contacts us and advise us that they have a noisy unit,
Our warren is for 5 years and unlimited mileage.
We even warrantied one when a customer forgot to put grease in and ruined it.
