Is everybody out there OK?
I put up the title and then started to think.
If you don't have electric power and internet, don't bother to answer. (Can you say DUH?)
The big line squall came through here last night and we have been out of power and broadband both since late last night. I just noticed that KenB said they got part of it and I got messages when I first got wire that both Cleveland and Pittsburgh got hit pretty hard. That has to mean that a lot of others did too.
"Alright Smartass - how are you doing what you are doing"
Well, traveling by GMC gets one good practice at using battery power and tethering to your phone. I have to either go out and buy more gas if I can find a station with power, or get out all the long cables and connectors to run the house from the GMC (nice to have a redundant backup). I'll get those cables laid out before dark just in case the power company misses their target and/or something happens to the 40yo Honda running the house right now.

I looked at the DTE outage map earlier, your area got hit hard for outages and only part of your street has been restored already so they must at least be working in your area. No estimated time given though.
Looks like I got lucky, map shows large outage area starting about three houses from me. My parents live about 1.5 miles away and outage extends to about two houses from them. I was going to take the GMC to their place if they were without power and hook them up to the Onan.

I recall many times when I lived in Holly Michigan, DTE would report regularly that 50,000 were without power, then 10,000 then 500, then all power restored. In the meanwhile I couldn't see a light on anywhere. It seems we weren't eeven on the radar.

I maybe asking a dumb question but what are your guys using to "hook em up with"
Just a standard RV dogbone? the 50 to 15/20 amp kind?
or have you made something? pictures? wiring diagrams?
I was thinking I want a cable that will run 2 separate leads each with the 20amp that the onan puts out.

I MIGHT UNDERSTAND why a person might be a victim to tornado damage ONCE!.
But once you see what kind of mayhem they cause, why would anyone ever be
in the way of two of them. Much less, erect an above ground stick built
structure without a well equipped storm cellar. Thanks, but no thank you.
We on the west coast refer to manufactured homes as "Tornado Magnets". I
know that Mac has had his GMC damaged on two occasions by Tornados. Must
really love the area to risk that kind of hazard. I hope all of you guys
are OK in the path of those things. I have a Sister in Alton, Il. Hope she
is Ok too.

"dogbone" refers to the power cord adapter plugs that allow you to connect your GMC power plug to whatever type of power plug that the campground has on the power pedestal. Most people have several different types. Probably most common are 50 amp 4 prong to 30 amp 3 prong. However, with a little looking around, you can find about every combination that you can think of.
This does not allow you to draw any more power than the lowest rated adapter, but allows you to get something.
Running from two different outside outlets will more than likely trip your GFI, and not do you any good. I have assembled a 50 amp dryer outlet with two 30 amp male cords that will work at some locations.
Tom, MS II With enough different dogbones to get from 50 amp to 15 amp.

Just wind and rain here yesterday afternoon. Whenever doing a less than full transfer switch type generator temp hook up, be sure you are not back feeding the service entrance. Good way to injure or kill a line worker who thinks the juice is off from his end, only to get zapped from the load side.

If you run a generator to provide emergency power to a house...
BE SURE TO TURN OFF THE MAIN BREAKER SO YOU DON'T BACK FEED TO THE POWER COMPANY LINES!!! YOU COULD KILL A LINEMAN OUT TRYING TO FIX YOUR POWER LINES.

I believe you'll find connecting a generator to anything connected to the grid should by code be connected through a two way 'air gap' switch. Use a heavy extension cord(s) for emergency power. If you're generating and the power co turns you back on, it can do Really Bad Things to your genset.
Alabama Poweer, Georgia Power, and two co-ops (the current folks who supply my plants where we have big gensets) also require an accessible disconnect for their incoming lines. Which they pull and lock when they're playing with our feeds after a storm and note my genset is running. I don't blame them. It is possible to reconnect in such a way that you can turn a large military portable genset on its side. Ask me how I know this:).
