RC,

When I was based in Sydney in the 1980's I considered building a Rotorway Helicopter which used a VW engine. I spoke to the Sporting
Aircraft Association of Australia (I think that was their name) and they were REALLY enthusiastic and I got excited. Then came the
punch line. The guy I was speaking to asked me how long I would be based in Australia which I thought was an interesting question
and I asked why do you ask the SAAA guy said; "BECAUSE NO ONE IN AUSTRALIA HAD EVER BUILT A KIT HELICOPTER BEFORE!" That was
followed by; "but don't let that discourage you we can and will help you working with the Civil Aviation Authority.

Needless to say I decided discretion was the better part of valor and decided to forget that plan!

There is no way I would get into either one of those aircraft, I've seen films of ultra light aircraft that have suffered in flight
failure and they glide like a BRICK!

Regards,
Rob M.

>in the 1980's I considered

I had my pilot's license in the 80s and owned part of a Cessna 172. As using that for going to a branch location didn't work out, I considered the possibility of a micro-copter. There have been two times when Death has whispered in my ear "get that and you are mine." That was one time.

The other was when I was 18 and found a Zundapp KS750.

What is wrong with that German motorcycle? It doesn't look like a
deathtrap! :-)

Also, one of those is a gyroplane. I can fly one of those! I've had 10
hours of dual instruction flying Gyro planes. Lessons were expensive though
and I stopped before I got my license.

Zundapp 750 plus 18 yo equals disaster waiting to happen. Back in the 70's a friend of mine bought a gyrocopter, learned to fly it but neglected the maintenance. The engine fell off in flight, either the fall and contact with the ground or the joystick through the chest killed him. All thoughts of flying one evaporated with me. Sad

My father was a classmate of Igor Benson. I got the plans and considered build a "Benson Gyrocopter", but the cost analysis terminated that adventure.

I had a chance to buy a Zündapp KS750 in full Wehrmachtsgespann condition. I didn't know how I could get it home on the school ship. Some time later, I did get a Norton Commando. I got it running and stopped most of the oil leaks. It was fun, but I sold it shortly after the nice guy in the CJ3 (Jeep) lifted it off my back. I had been forced to wait for him to make a wrong turn. (He shouldn't have been coming by there at all.)

Did I happen to mention that I have always linked to a guardian angel that doesn't mind working evenings and weekends? These days, I do my best to not stain that relationship.

I had a BD-5 'micro-jet' kit. Think "coors light/Bud light jet" or if you
seen the james bond movie octopussy its the one man jet he flies away in.

I never did finish it, but did spend more then a few nights in it making
jet noises.

It was essentially complete, but missing the engine. TRS 80 APU engines are
not cheap, nor available in central Kansas. :)

Anyway, I am working on a Long EZ (Rutan) canard. Safer, more stable, stall
proof and (almost) as much fun as a BD-5 Jet.

mine? Its at home. :)

As for others:

BD micro of Siletz OR still manufactures them. in Jet/Turboprop/piston form.

Alturair makes a kit for the BD 5 too.

Jim Bede has a company that makes them, too.

My Army bud who was trying to show me how wouldn't get close to a Benson or a Rotorway. "Not enough mass in the rotor to save you if it quits".  He wouldn't do practice autorotations in the Brantleys they had, "Come on, we'll do that in one of the Hueys where there's some leeway."  He walked away from three of them in various states of disrepair in SEA. Very different from the fixed-wing stuff I flew at the time.
When we bought my Mom a big Evinrude for her houseboat after we wore out the fiorst motor, the dealer told us he had to assure Outboard Marine that the motors he sold went on boats, not to people building helicopters.

guy showed up at the Cracker fliy-in a couple years ago with a Rotorway with a turbine in it - some sort of APU powerplant.  Little bitty thing.  He had kerosene tanks hung all over the frame, and said he was limited to just over an hour plus a bit of reserve.

Here's what you DON'T want to do if you do build or buy a helicopter...

http://habcycles.com/helocrash.wmv

Apparently the guy bought it, and decided to just lift it barely off the ground - before getting any kind of instruction on how to actually operate a helicopter. The results are predictable (other than the fact the guy survived intact).

Makes owning a GMC seem so simple in comparison...
