My Aunt is considering selling her 2012 GEM electric car and I have half a thought to buy it as a towd, though it would need a trailer. I think it might be more trouble than it's worth, and probably should look for an old Saturn.

It's a cute car, though it's very limited. Really it's just a big golf cart, seats 2 and has a big trunk. Any thoughts?

As a towd people might think you are trying to compensate for something ;)

I don't know about a GEM, but I'm planning on using my electric 1980 Bradley GTE as a towd.
The GEM may work very well, depending on what type of transportation you need, how far you need to travel, speed limit of the roads, etc.

Jeff,

Is the Bradley GTE the little door-stop looking thing?

Larry,

I just checked and if it's the model I looked at it has 12" wheels and a top speed of 25 mph so you'd have to trailer it as I don't
think it would be too stable behind a GMC doing 60! ;-)

I would be concerned as to where you would recharge the batteries when in a remote area. You could be stranded in the outback!

My battery guy told me the price for the GEM batteries is insane.
For that reason I'm looking for a street legal golf cart to use as a towed.
We would have it in a inclosed trailer along with our bikes.

I remember those. An electric one - very cool.

The GEM is a lot of fun to drive, but it is limited to slow speed.

It's one of about 50, so there isn't many still around.

And, As it is actually a VDub, it could be towed on their regular towbar and 4-down.

Most electrics and hybrids can't be towed 4-down and as close as I have been able to determine, this is a problem the IC part of the drive.

Most of the electrics sold recently are limited (by design) to less than 45MPH simply because the DOT and NHSTA require things that can go faster to be crash certified and that is real expensive to do.

Now if someone built an electric that:
A - was built to be towed 4-down
B - could recharge with the dynamic braking when signaled by the tow vehicle.

I think that they could OWN the towd market in short order.
