I'm trying to figure out if the Onan charges the house battery at all if the buzz box is off. I know it has a small onboard 12v charging system, but my understanding is that it is not used on any but the earliest coaches.

Nope! The Onan small charging system has been disabled by most owners. If you have one of the smart charging systems it can interfere with smart chargers.

If you have a stock 76 the buzz box charges the house batt if on shore power or gen power with the plug in the recepticle. If you have a combiner it would also charge the engine batt. Charge is a guarded word as it never completes the charge and then floats, shortening battery life. A modern charge converter solves this issue over the buzz box.

Thanks, that is what I thought, but it's nice to have confirmation. I have a 60 amp Inteli-Power 9200 sitting right here that's going in as soon as I find the time.

However, if it is still mounted on the Onan it probably is wired in to put in a trickle charge if the Onan is running.
When I installed my Statpower TruCharge 40 on my 1977 it would not charge the rear battery as it detected another charging source to that battery. Then manual said that it would not charge if another charger was connected to the battery. I disconnected the little charger on the Onan and then it worked fine. So, that shows that the little on-board charger was still working on the 1977 models.
There are two leads to the charger. One of them is a double wire connected to a single terminal. Leave both of those wires attached to that terminal adapter but tape around it. The other lead is a single lead. Just unplug it and tape it off as well. I removed the little charger. No need to have the little bit of extra weight when it wasn't being used.
