Greetings all and happy Veterans Day! I picked up me new to me GMC
yesterday, drove it home and am glad I made it!
I found the coach on Craigslist and was fortunate enough to have had Larry
Coldren and Bill Bramlett take a look at it for me. I can't thank these two
enough for taking the time to give it a once over and to give me some peace
of mind it would make the trip from Denver to Minneapolis without major
issues.
The trip went well with only minor issues. First I noticed if you really
stick your foot into it, I can hear detonation. Plan on checking out the
HEI unit ASAP. Then around 9PM last night I noticed the GEN light dimly
glowing once in awhile. Thought about it while driving and correlated the
light coming on to the air pump turning on. I figure the alternator is on
it's way out so a replacement will be happening. Made it to the metro and
while sitting in traffic the brake light came on. A quick pump on the pedal
and all was well, but I suspect the master is getting funky. I plan on
replacing the booster, proportioning valve and master all at the same time.
I was very thankful for the new all season tires as I was driving in snow
and eventually glare ice between Clear Lake, IA and Fairbault, MN. The GMC
handled it as well as I could expect.
So, about the coach. It's a 1975 Eleganza, 26' side bath, 99,XXX miles.
Brakes redone, (pads, wheel cylinders) Onan rebuilt, new tires on
Alcoa's, general maintenance kept up.
So, I'm looking at replacing the brake booster, master cylinder and
proportioning valve. Also the alternator, fuel pump and water pump.
Suggestions for sources for these parts?

Thanks in advance and I look foreward to hanging around here.

The detonation could be caused by incorrect intial timing, a defective vacuum advance, or stuck weights in your centrifugal advance. The dim alternator light is not all that unusual and can be caused by a poor ground in the system--don't write the alternator off yet.

Don't assume the alternator is bad. There are lots of reasons the idiot like will glow when the alternator is just fine. Search the forum for "alternator light glows" to find a few.

The switch for that brake light is on the combination valve. It means there was a problem with the proportions of fluid going to the front and rear sets of brakes.

Neal,

Welcome to the group, family, cult, asylum....

For parts, Put Jim Kanomata (Applied GMC - 800-572-7502) put that in your speed dial. The only things to buy locally are parts you need now and are positive they can get the correct one (not a sure bet), filters and oil. If in any doubt, call Applied. If you need it fast, tell them then hang up and run to the door. (A slight exaggeration.)

First, it isn't really a proportioning valve. (I always call it that - too.) It is a combination valve. It only does a hold-off to let the rear shoes catch up and then it goes away. It also has the differential switch in it. (The Brake light on the dash.)

Did you check the brake fluid levels? If one is low that that light can come on.

If things aren't as good as they can be, that alternator light can glow at high load. Look for bad connections. We get a lot of that.

E-10 (herein referred to as crapahol) has caused us all a lot of grief. Be ready for it. Any old rubber in the fuel system can be a big problem.

Actually, at 35+ years any original rubber anywhere can be a problem.

You have already had some experience with this community you of which you have just become a part. It is like few others. You will find that this is a very special thing. As it is like the one of the watermen that I know, I have elected to welcome new owners much as a new owner or vessel would be welcomed. So,

May the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that set forth within her. (It would seem you have a very good start there.)

Welcome Niel,

Matt

,Neal,
Welcome, there are lots of us out here willing to assist you with questions and concerns.
Yes, we are a major supplier for the GMC, but it did not happen by luck alone.
There are lot of people there back home that will tell you that we take time to speak with you and answer
any questions on the GMC.
If I am tied up, Nick, or our technicians will help out.
We are known to refer people to those that know some areas of the coach well and since we get along well with them, they will assist you gladly.
We also have a sample catalog that show some of the parts we carry. Should you not see it, just cakk as we will have them.

Welcome to the GMC world. I am glad you had a safe and uneventful trip. Be
sure to have the front bearings serviced by a knowledge GMC Motorhome shop.
If you can't find a local shop contact the Greater Midwest Classics, the GMC
club covering your area. Don't believe a mechanic that tells you he can do
it unless he drives or regularly services GMC motorhome.
