I used a regular old hot glue gun (hobby variety) to fix a very large
crack in our original fresh water tank. The glue sticks for these, as it turns out,
are polyethylene. It's been holding fine for 3 years (of course, I shouldn't
say that -- might jinx it...)
You can also buy a special plastic welding setup, but it's a lot more money.

I fixed a crack in the same general area in mine about 20 years ago with a soldering iron and a piece of polyethylene it hasn't leaked since.

For a little extra insurance you can cover your repair with food grade
silicone.

BUT silicone rubber doesn't really stick to polyethylene. If you really rough it up with coarse sandpaper it might stick mechanically a bit better.

Robin,
Last year, at the sand dunes, I laid my Honda Odyssey buggy over on it's side hard. The result was a broken back fender. A few weeks ago, I took the fender off and took it to a local plastics shop. They tested it, discovered it was made out of weldable polyethylene, and welded it back together for $35.00. The break was about 16" to 18" long. Since you have the tank out already, it might be worth your while to look into having it professionally welded. It saved me a couple hundred dollars over buying a new fender, if it was even available.
