Robin and all you other squealers!

Please take a look at the adjuster that I make for Jim K at Applied GMC.

http://appliedgmc.com/images/Alternator_adjust.jpg

Once installed, it is fool proof and maintains tension until you loosen the
jamb nut and re-tension. This not a hardware store kit.

It employs an engineered drive mechanism that will always self align and
never bend under tension. The adjustment screw is a robust 1/2-13 thread.

You can't go wrong!

It's a nice piece of work but I have never realized the need for an adjuster on the alternator. I just replaced mine last week and was able to tension it with a large screwdriver between the head and the front housing which seems more than robust to handle the load. The alternator adjustment is almost an over-center curve and requires very little force to tighten the belt.

I find the AC compressor far more difficult to get tight. The alternator and power steering haven't given me too much trouble. It still is a pain in the @$$...

I agree--the AC seems most difficult to me.

The tension on these belts are more sensitive than most of us want to realize.
I know most shops will over tight the belts as we do not like to have customers complain about noise.
Belt tensioners that are available on our coach help to get a more precise tension if your willing to take the time.
If adjusted too tight, your risking bearing failer, not enough will alert with the slipping noise.

The A/C compressor tightens easily if you take the pax side fender liner out.  Through the hatch, it looks hard.

I seem to burn them out long before I see a bearing failure. In fact now that I think about it, I have never had an alternator bearing fail in any machine I've had. I'm not saying it doesn't happen--just lucky I guess.
