The GMC forum has been a great source of information for us on all sorts of topics. However, once a topic/title has been established and replies are made, why is it that some replies show up as if they are new topics (titles with [GMCnet] in them) instead or replies to the original posted topic/title. It would make it much easier to follow and understand if all the replies were posted under the original title heading. Case in point - "Frame and Body Pads.

Thanks,

I think it's due to this forum actually being a hybrid of a both a forum and an email listserv. From my guesstimates, about 65% of the members use listserv and that's where the splitting occurs somehow. It's a nuisance from ther forum-users' perspective but the dual system is otherwise a great set-up.

I rather like the email version. :) I'm guilty of replying but not trimming
the message content, which i understand shows up on the forum as a ton of
extra unneeed text... text that my email program correctly ignores and
hides away. Making sure we email users don't automatically quote an entire
message thread when we responde to a posting would probably be a bigger
help to the forumites. I'll try. :)

Yeah, the trailing replies get a little loooooooooooooong, but you learn to live with it.

With the omnipresence of smartphones and email apps nowadays, I can see the email version being the better failsafe mechanism for "GMC DOWN!" help posts. We've seen a few of those and though I've been of no help in those cases, it still makes me proud of GMCnet.

We forumites try to post straight links so you guys can see them.

I am a dual citizen, my setup allows me to read either the email view or the forum view, whichever is more convenient. I almost always reply or post in the forum, though.

RC,

If you look below you will my standard reply treatment.

I delete Sent, To, Subject, and trim From to only the name.

I delete any earlier messages in the message I am replying to.

If there is a signature that contains a name I leave it, anything else goes.

I delete the blurb that the GMCnet adds referring to itself and how to unsubscribe.

a minor problem with dual citizenship is that the forum lags behind the listserv

I probably just don't know how to manipulate this iPad but from my viewpoint, it's VERY cumbersome to do what Rob suggests. I DO try to do that from my very slow computer email.

I was addressing the long trailing messages that RC noted I did not mean to suggest that was what OTHER people should do.

I just replied to this on my iPhone.
Pretty easy. Just push the round button at the bottom of the screen and release and the select bix appears. Move the cursor to the beginning and then the end of the section you want to cut and then select "cut".

Icandoutasquickly as ican on my computer.

The biggest forum/emailer issue I think is that some emailers split the thread by NOT replying "correctly". I think they must just copy the subject line from someone else's message and then send it out as a new message instead of using the "reply" function of their email program. If you look at messages (on the forum at least) you will see that each message has a number and if it is a reply to another message then it quotes that message number. That is what the forum software uses to build the tree display structure.

Emery what you stated about editing an email with the iPhone is all true except the round button part. On my iPhone5 running the latest version of IOS 7, the only round button available closes the active window. Your phone must have a customized setting.

I think Emery was referring to the handles that appear when you touch and hold on a word.

Very possible, but he does say to press the round button to bring up the select box. The select box is what has those blue handles that permit you to select what text it contains.

I guess we need to wait for emery to explain in more detail.

I don't know why that happens, but you may have noticed that the first message in those replies is usually the same one or two folks. Don't know why their system or habit makes that happen. It is annoying because it takes away some of the benefits of the forum automatically keeping the whole thread together without any editing or manipulating. Many folks don't seem to look at the thread before replying. Maybe why so many replies get so far off topic. But then what's the fun if it were to stay all organized.

There is no set answer when it comes to email programs. It all depends on what program (or web site in the case of services like gmail or yahoo) the end user is using. So you cannot give general instructions to people and say you did this right or wrong.

The thing about web based forums is everyone starts or replies to postings in the same manner because only one program is running the show for all members.

Email relay systems were never designed for advanced functions. They simply receive an email, verify it's authenticity, and send it out to every one on it's internal list. Any further processing (if any) is the responsibility of receiver's email program. Some email relay systems do have the ability to batch received emails together and send them out only when a certain number have been held in queue or a certain amount of time has expired.

My best advice is to put up with it because you are never going to fix it as long as email access with it's limited function is intermixed with a higher function system.

Be happy with what you have.

You are correct. I misspoke. You press the screen and you get a round "button" that is a magnifying glass that allows you to position the selection point. When you release your finger you get a box that says select select all and paste.
