Happy Thursday GMC gang!

So I am shopping for a radio for the coach and since it's still being worked on and not handy, I am gambling someone here knows the dimensions of the 8 track AM Delco unit opening and the post to post measurements of the control knobs....

Any takers and I will forever thank you on my maiden voyage!!!

Also beer or 2 or 3 when I see you on the road.

Thanks David just what I need!

I think am going with a RetroSound unit that has 200 watts
remote control, usb and aux in mini jack on the front.
Fits the original opening too. I kinda like what it offers
and really for 160.00 it's a pretty good deal for an OEM fit.

Thanks again...

Fold back the mounting ears for the OEM mount, and the opening is almost a perfect DIN size number 1. Slight difference, but works.
Face plate should cover the opening with a very slight gap at the top and bottom. Works for me.

I did what Tom did - opened up the hole in the dash to a DIN 1 size hole, and mounted a modern radio in it (complete with HD radio, CD player, aux input and a USB flash drive connector). Four channels of relatively high power output, plus a low-level output to drive my subwoofer amp, and it was still chump change.

You can see the very slight gap at the bottom of the faceplate Tom mentioned on the installation I did here: http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/member-galleries/p46286-stereo-installation-in.html

And FWIW, the dinette base makes a great subwoofer installation location (if you're into that sort of thing): http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/electrical/p46288-stereo-installation-in-my.html

While you are at it, you may want to search for threads regarding the speaker wiring. Early coaches had grounded speakers rather than a floating ground like modern radios. It may involve rewiring or an adapter.

To amplify Bob's warning on speaker wiring. All modern radios have separate pairs for the speakers. Tying the grounds together will produce unexpected results and may lead to the destruction of the audio amplifier in the radio. Just as easy to run new heavier gauge wires directly to each speaker. Wires to the rear speakers may be a challenge.
Crunchfield does sell a floating ground accessory, but I haven't knowledge or experience with it.

The "floating" ground adapter is just a big-assed non-polar electrolytic capacitor. I have installed them and was not impressed with the result and I can't hear well anymore. It is a much better idea to pull you own pairs everywhere you want to go.

And while you are at it. The original speakers in the original locations are a complete waste of effort. The only good thing about them is that they are a great example of just how poor an installation can be.

I used all four speakers up front and am glad I did. I may pull two pair to the rear this winter along with all the other new copper I need to put in the coach.

Okay - here is a question for anyone with multiple pairs of speakers - how do you control the volume when you have more than 2 pair? I'd like to set my stereo up with a pair in the old rear corners, I have a pair under the overhead cabinets in the living area and the cockpit. I'm not sure how to wire this.

Hi, Larry...

What I did was to wire the four speakers in the "living room" to the front channels (paralleling the two on the right, and the two on the left). Wiring is pretty simple doing it this way, with the only tricky part getting from the carpet or behind the side panels next to the front seats, up the wall to run the wire behind the cabinets (which I just stapled up - you have to be laying with your head in the window, looking straight up to see the staples).

Here are the four "living room speakers"... http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/electrical/p46287-stereo-installation-in-my.html

Those are KLH monitor speakers, and being able to swivel the tweeters 360 degree is a big plus.

Then I paralleled the front (above the cockpit) and rear (in the bedroom, rear corners) speakers and hooked them to the rear channels. Yes, if I was overly anal about balancing the sound I might have done it slightly different, but it works very well, especially since you can't hear the front speakers from the rear, or vice versa. The PO installed cut-out switches for the rear bedroom speakers, so we do have the option of turning them on or off.

In the end, there's PLENTY of sound in my coach... not up to my normal "live band sound" standards, but realistically it's louder than I ever want to listen to it, and it's really quite clean... and I think my total investment (including the dash radio, used monitor speakers, subwoofer amp and subwoofers, plus all the wiring to hook it up) was only around $250.

Just be creative, and you can do quite a bit for not much money.

The cutout in the metal on mine is exactly one DIN height.  I took a DIN mount and simply bent the tabs where the knobs go through back enough to pin the sides, and then opushed the mount in and opened the top and bottom hold tabs, so any DIN would fit.  I put a Kenwood in mine.

Larry,

I cheated. I added another pair to the cab overhead.

Left is front, right is rear. It is like wearing headphones except we can carry on a conversation with the traveling music at a nice lever. Co-pilot can adjust things with the remote velcroed to the over head. There are other places to stick the remote in the galley and in the back bedroom.

When I put the new speakers in the back bedroom, it will also add a complex switch so both outer front become front right and left and the rear are then in the rear (Duh?).

Glad you found my photos helpful. I got sidetracked and haven't replaced my radio yet. I'll have to checkout the RetroSound ones.

Might be awhile until we meet on the road. Too bad you didn't ask for the dimensions in August. I was in Ventura visiting my brother and could have collected my beer then.
