Eugege has asked several times in the past for us not to embed photos in
our posts on the phorum. The phorum is flushed from time to time to trim
it's storage requirements and to keep things running properly. At that
time, the past is lost.
The photo site is made for this. Photo titles and descriptions as well as
album intrductions allow for unlimited commentary. AND, it'll be there
FOREVER.

Speaking of Photos - Is there any way to do a search while on the Photo site?

I was looking for something just the other day and I had to look through all the albums pictures in the mechanical album.

Notice taken, it is however the first forum I have been to that actually ask you to not post photo's and use links to another site.

No problem, just a new thing for me Smile

Espen,

That is because this is not really a forum, it started out as an E-mail list server and part of it still is and is used that way. The problem is that the list server does not have the bandwidth to put pictures in the e-mail. People can and do post pictures here, but those that are on the list as e-mail don't get them and may not even get links to get them.

If/when you get around to placing your photos on the GMC photo site, comments and explanations are most welcome in the fields provided.

As far as posting photos to the forum, the size is limited so that you can't do it. Just continue to post the links as you have been (once as a straight URL and again inside the IMG tags) so we can all see what you are doing.

The size of attachments is limited so that nobody is able to imbed photos in our posts. What we are doing is placing a URL inside the IMG tags so that forum users browsers can retrieve the pictures from somewhere else and display them in the post. That method uses EXACTLY 11 BYTES more storage on the server (thats BYTES, NOT KILOBYTES, MEGABYTES or whatever) than using the URL without the IMG tags. For email users we have to put the URL in again WITHOUT the IMG tags because the mail server strips off the one with the IMG tags. That increases storage on the server by as many bytes as the length of the URL. We are talking maybe a hundred bytes or so to double post the link so that the photo appears in the post for forum users AND email users can open them in a browser.

Of course! But for pospererity sake, we'd rather have them on OUR site
with appropriate descriptions for the search engine.

I think you misunderstand Billy.

People are NOT imbedding photos. They are imbedding LINKS to photos on the GMCphoto site or elsewhere just like emailers do.

The only difference for us is when the posting is displayed on our browser we automatically see the photo inline which was automatically retrieved by our browser from the GMC photo site.

For us it is kind of like reading a book or a newspaper instead of having to go to the appendix or another book to find the photos.

The photos in question are NOT stored on Eugene's site and the photo data never flowed to or through Eugene's site. Doing what we are doing does NOT increase Eugene's storage requirement or increase the bandwidth required by Eugene's server. It also does not hurt email users.

Eugene does not allow or provide space for storing photos just like the email server.

Close. When we use the IMG tags around a link to a picture, we increase the length of the post by 11 bytes. When we duplicate the URL without the IMG tags for the mail list subscribers, it increases the length of the post by the number of characters in the URL. In engineering language, we call that difference "negligible".

Yep. I use the phorum so seldom that I didn't realize Eugene had imposed size restrictions as well. Of course, I know that the tags are negligible in size.

Still need to use gmcmhphotos.com for storage for posterity sake.

So I have been putting the photos on the photo site AND inserting the photos into my forum posts AND providing a link for the email guys to click on. Is that not an acceptable approach?

Keep doing what you are doing. You are not inserting photos into your forum posts. You are inserting a LINK to the photos via the IMG feature that makes the images APPEAR in your posts without actually taking up space on the server. Mostly. Like I have posted a couple of times today, using the IMG tags adds 11 characters to the post length. Duplicating the url without the IMG tags for the mail list subscribers adds the number of characters in the url to the length of the post. A hundred characters, more or less.
