My dome lights have never worked from the door switch. Either off, on manually, or on from the headlight switch.

Mine also works the same way as yours and Appie's. I believe that ours are the standard way they were wired. One direction on the switch (usually up) turns the light on. The center position turns the light off. The third position (usually down) enables control of the light by rotating the headlight switch.
I just looked at the 1975 (Engine side) 12 volt wiring diagram and it shows the dome lamps being controller by the headlight switch, not the entry door switch. Maybe they were different in other years.

I added a ground from the passenger dome switch to the door entry light jam switch ground, this allows the cockpit dome lights (both) to illuminate when the door is open, as well as the door splash light can be controlled by the headlight switch. I also added a few LED license plate lights under the coach that illuminate the ground when the door is open ( same circuit)... Now I would like to add a time delay so the dome lights stay on for a few seconds after the door is closed.
