Last camping trip we were running the furnace and we smelled a propane smell that got fairly strong, so we shut down the furnace immediatly and shut off the propane back at the tank. I carry a little ceramic heater as a back up and it kept us plently warm over the night...a bit cold in the morning but kicked it up to high and it got it warm. My question is where do I start with this. I've taken a look and don't see anything pertaining to propane tank valve and regulator upgrades on the GMC suppliers, unless I'm blind. Is this something I can just take a trip up to the hardware store and buy to replace, or do I need to have an RV place do the work for me? I'll get some gas leak detector from the store and check all the connections up to the furnace from the tank to make sure I don't have any leaks along the way, but I suspect the original valve is leaking.

Tom, go to the toy section of WalMart and buy a bottle of bubble juice - it's way cheaper than leak detect and it serves the same purpose. If like me you have a flexible hose coming off the tank regulator and going down to the floor of the propane tank compartment where it hooks to hardline to the stove and furnace and icebox (and if it's gas the water heater) wet the hose along its entire length with bubble juice and watch it for a while to see if it eventually grows a small bubble or two anywhere. If it does, take it off and reoplace it. An appliance parts store ought to have one close in length, or be able to make you one. Soap all the connections under and inside. if nothing leaks, then start the furnace and while the gas valve is open, soap the lines in the furnace. Tighten or replace as appropriate anywhere you can grow a bubble.
I have my furnace on a table in my garage, sometime the next couple of weeks the drill is to disassemble it and check for condition -I've no idea how old it is. I'm not gonna use it until I'm assured the burner and exhaust don't leak, and I have a new CO detector in the coach and working.

My leak ended up being a poorly done flare connection under the bed by the previous owner.
Do you have an original coach? mine was redone my a pack of drunk monkeys and ran the gas line inside with leaky connections.. actually had flare connections with teflon tape on them!

I just posted on a similar problem recently. My was leaking around the stem of the valve. I did what Johnny suggests, but just started at the valve and found the leak there. You can get a new 2 stage regulator at any RV store for around $20, but I had to go to a Ferellgas dealer to buy a standard 100 pound cylinder valve ($23 I think) for a replacement.

Mine wound up being my black tank venting. You should have a gas detector mounted as low as possible just to be safe.

Those must of been the drunk monkeys who worked for Norris when they upfitted mine. They moved on to Midas I'm told.

LOL, Executive coaches did mine in 2002.
They did some great carpentry, but were way out of their league doing water and gas.
Electrical must have been farmed out!
