Flashing the field coil. After trying everything else, I hooked a 12 volt battery to the field coil wires and let it sit for several seconds. Got a huge spark when I disconnected it (blew the tip off my poor little alligator clip). Fired it up, and it's putting out a steady 130 VAC. So now just needs a little adjusting to get the voltage down a tad and we're good to go.

FYI the original field coil was bad (open), and I have no idea how long the one I replace it with had been sitting. Could have been years, or decades.

Nice work, Son ! <g>

When making your adjustments remember to try to have it putting out
120volts Under Load...if you weren't going to load it up you wouldn't have
turned it on and 120 is what it would be getting at your house. Just
sayin' ....

I just know that Jim Miller will not say "I told you so! " But, I am sure he will be thinking it.

And I'll say I knew what was wrong all along, I was just testing him! ;o)

Just glad to hear that it is working.

My suggestion to apply 12VDC directly to the fields (using the proper polarity) while watching for ~50VAC output can save a lot of time in the troubleshooting process because:

1) It proves the field windings are intact.
2) It proves the armature is OK
3) It proves the brushes are OK
4) It "re-flashes the field" as others have described.

There's no reason to fear the application of 12VDC during the test because under normal operating conditions the reactor and bridge are applying around 110 VDC at 3 Amps to the field. In the test I described the 12VDC application to the field only draws around 300 milliamps!

The absolutely best instrument to set up an Onan is a Kill-a-Watt. Version does not matter. Put the unit in the coach, fire it up, throw an extension cord out a window in the port (left) side and plug it in there. Then, fire up the A/C, the microwave and the water heater and now you can check frequency and line voltage and decide which you like more.

This is from a guy with 2ea Fluke 77, an 87, a multi-hundred MHz counter and a whole bunch of other tech stuff. He uses the 30$ thing to set up the Onan.

Now, make arrangements with Jim to get the bad field re-wound.

Matt,

And they sell them at MY favorite tool store Harbor Freight!

Unfortunately I just had to replace mine when it began reading 144 Volts plugged into the galley plug!
