I was tightening the drive axle nut to spec torque and it just didn't "seem tight enough". So I took a look in the various maintenance manuals.

'73 MM calls for 110
'75-'76 calls for 140-280
'76 supplement calls for 110-140

All are listed as plus enough additional tightening to insert the cotter pin.

So after all the years since the above info was published is there a consensus as to the proper torque value to use?

Tight as you can get it, then one more round.

Try a 3 ft pipe on the end of a 1/2" breaker bar.
When the bar breaks, it's just right...<VBG>

Return breaker bar for replacement under warranty!

Steve,

I discovered that there is a FIND function in Adobe Reader under EDIT so I typed in "drive axle" and found the following in each of
the manuals which I've copied and pasted info out of each manual.

The inconsistencies are worse than you noted!

5. Install washer and nut on drive axle. Torque to 110 ft. lbs. Insert cotter pin and crimp. Tighten nut to insert cotter pin.

APPLICATION:......................... FT. LBS.
Drive Axle Nut at Wheel Hub:..... 110

Nut must be tightened to insert cotter pin.

4. Install drive axle washer and nut. Torque nut to 140 ft. lbs. If necessary to align cotter pin slot, tighten nut and install NEW
cotter pin and crimp. Torque not to exceed 280 ft. lbs. NOTE: Do not back off nut to install cotter pin.

5. Install washer and nut on drive axle. Torque to 200 ft. lbs. Insert cotter pin and crimp. Tighten nut to insert cotter pin.

8. Install drive axle washer and nut. Torque to 200 ft . lbs. Install cotter pin and crimp. Tighten nut, if necessary to install
cotter pin.

*NOTE: After reaching minimum torque required, nut must always be tightened to insert cotter pin. Never back nut off.

4. Install drive axle washer and nut. Torque nut. See Specifications at the end of this section for torque value and procedure. If
necessary to align cotter pin slot, tighten nut and install NEW cotter pin and crimp .

I reckon there was confusion as to the amount of torque they wanted on the axle nut so they went through a number of different
write-ups for this procedure.

IIRC I torqued the nuts on Double Trouble to 110 and checked the alignment of the cotter key holes. It was no go so I set the torque
wrench to 120 - 130 -140 etc until the cotter pin hole aligned with a slot in the castle nut. I don't remember what that value was
but I know it was not greater than 280.
