Hello-

I am new to this site, and new to RV'ing and GMC Motorhomes. My lady friend
Melinda and I have become interested in learning a bit more about travel,
seeing the world, all that fun stuff, and so we started looking at ways to
do it, which led to the topic of RVs. Actually looking at some boxy RVs in a
dealer's lot raised some concerns, both aesthetic and technical, and so we
started looking for some alternatives to the typical offerings. Of course
Airstream caught our attention, as did bus conversions, then we stumbled
onto these curious things called GMC motorhomes, and we feel that this is an
area that we need to explore a bit more. Of course we have looked at a lot
of online material, but would like very much to actually see a unit and talk
to some folks who know about them. We are located in Morris County, New
Jersey, and wonder if anyone out there has any suggestions, would be willing
to give us a tour of their unit, something along those lines.

Thanks,

Peter Helck

Hi, Peter,

You will soon get some responses from the clan members in New Jersey. You will find it is recommended to fill out the signature box. So many people scan messages and look at that first in order to get the "gestalt" or framework for their reply. Note at the end of this message, people learn that I am in Ennis, Texas, have a 1978 Royale which is one of the last years built, has a Cadillac 500 cubic inch engine substituted for the Oldsmobile 403 cubic inch engine, and has electronic fuel injection, from a guru of Accel injector retrofits, Rance Baxter, who is near you.

Read the advice given for new owners or prospective owners by Dan Gregg in the last couple of days. Dan Gregg goes here by his amateur radio callsign, WD0AFQ. He has great advice.

My advice while you are investigating the way to go is to realize that while even a new high dollar rig will have a warranty associated with it, having a warranty claim processed properly, fixed correctly, and within a convenient time frame is a matter of some variability, according to some with bitter experience. Note that GMCs will give you some hair pulling times, but if you persevere through them, take advice given from the gurus, many of whom are friends who also have a business repairing our rigs, you can end up with a classic that does much of what you want. You can grin all the way to the bank. You will have to do or make sure proper periodic maintenance is done, and caught up with. The tendency of many of us to ignore preventive maintenance on some cars and sell and sell them before they make us pay is disastrous for our motorhomes. They are all old enough for the sins of the forefathers to have caught up with them. Beware of claims that work was done if there is no written evidence. If the P.O. (and that means Previous Owner, often spoken of fondly but sometimes with mutters under the breath, ignored the maintenance needs while he or she had a time of bad health, and had to sell it, then you have some catching up to do. This is a part time job at least. The checklist is massive. Then, you will see, see a picture of or read or hear about some desirable modification that you will just have to have. Off you go. There is some very good advice on here, and any controversial or just plain bad advice will be contradicted in the same thread. There are perhaps some things we all know that just ain't true, but I think they are very few, and Darwin takes care of some of these modifications.

You have found your solution, read about it and see if you can bear to own anything else. I don't think you will be able to. In that vein, welcome to the list and we need you and your new motorhome to keep the number of operational vehicles up.

Carey from Ennis, Texas 78 Royale, 500 Cadillac, Rance Baxter EFI.

Peter,

You are quite fortunate as you are located about 75 miles from Ken Frey's shop in Quakertown, PA.

Ken Frey's website is virtually unreadable for me. The type is of extremely small font size and there is virtually no contrast between type color and background color in the center section. I THINK I was able to use his "contact" section to report that situation to him.

Mac, try clicking somewhere on the web page, then do a Ctrl+A for "select
all".
That will change colors and may be easier to read. Won't help the font
size, but the colors will be different.
Just looked up the site....That's terrible, hope he changes it. Ctrl A
makes the text white and it's then readable.

<<Ken Frey's website is virtually unreadable for me>>

If you use IE, a couple of clicks in the bottom corner brings up the image size.

Very nice colorful web page.

What colors do you see on the center of the home page of the Ken Frey
website, Don?
Background and text? In the center part of the page, I see a medium
brown background with text that may be a dark blue.
Ctrl + does enlarge the page. If I do it enough times, I can also read
the page. It's still enough of a hassle that I wouldn't bother,
unless I knew something I really need was hidden in that mess.

Peter,

Two things I will suggest, one is that you read a thread that just went by about inexpensive dependable Class A motorhomes. It may be an eye-opener. Yes, they are neat and we love ours, but you have to be very ready to do all the maintenance required and have the patience required to live with a 30+ (ours is 40) year old machine.

Then, get to see and talk to as many owners as you can, and yes, as Rob said, the Square in Morristown is about 75 miles from Ken Frey. That would be a day well spent. There are more than just those that inhabit this list. There are three on the GMC Assist (aka Black -for Roger-)List and two of those are in the northern end.

If decide to pursue owning a GMC, you will find them relatively easy to come by as many owners can no longer give them the care required and most give them up before they let them sink into the mud. Watching the websites of the chapters is just one good way to find one.

I will tell from some significant experience, that there is no better way to travel and see things than in a Class A motorhome. From there, my list goes:
(Class A - mentioned)
Class C - might as well be a truck
Class B - still is a truck
Bicycle touring - you get to see more and the ventilation is great, but 50 miles is a really long day.
Truck dragging something - you have a truck and nothing is convenient to get to - it's all in the back.

I wish you luck.

Bill-

Thank you for taking the time to speak with me the other night, it was both
very pleasant, and extremely helpful. Such a curious coincidence that we may
have met ~45 years ago (Too be honest, I don't remember, I was maybe 13 at
the time). I told my dad about our conversation, common ties, and he would
love to come up there some time and visit.

Thank You,
Peter Helck

Sean-

Thank you so much for having us over on Sunday. Melinda and I very much
enjoyed meeting you and your family, and of course Oliver too. This was our
first time up close and personal with a GMC Motorhome, the technical tour
was very informative and eye-opening. We are continuing our exploration of
this subject, I think I will go and see the coach for sale in Monmouth
County next. Again, thank you.
