Regretfully I may be the resident expert on Cancer being in this fight
for the past 9 years.
I am writing this open letter to Dan and all others based on my experiences.

Even today I am going in for yet another radiation treatment AND chemo,
8 weeks on this trip
I have expert doctoring, live 50 miles from Strong Cancer center of
Rochester and have made that trip 8 times in the past 11 days.
Hundred of times in past 9 yrs. on and off. 5 operations and 4 chemo
bouts, 3 radiation bouts.

1- Once you have cancer, it is there forever. Remisssion maybe, but
gone, no.
Treatment may make it benign but it returns, in my case it has been
generally one year intense and one year free.
There is no such thing as cancer free. one can get free TEMPORARILY til
it returns

2- No one really knows what trips the bad cells that EVERYONE carries.

3- Get periodic PSA exam and colonoscopy. They do predict the future
accurately.

4- I have no solution to diet; have always eaten right, greens and
fruits over red meat. Got the big C.

5 -Some prescribe a diet which results in low pH, under 7, [amount of
Hydrogen] and some recommend hi pH, over 7,
pH of 7 is neutral.

6- Your life will never be the same.
You will live in a state of anxiety and doubt. You will be involved in
unwanted travel, disruption and upset plans.

7- No amount of financial buffer set aside for retirement is ever enuf.
Treatment is expensive.
Example- CAT scans are routine, cost about $2k and I have had many.
PET scans with the 3D image cost $10k and I have had 3 so far.
Insurance covers some but not all. Chemo infusions are debilitating,
time consuming and draining. SIde effects are not nice.

8- Support person is essential, I have the best in Joan.

All said, cancer can be survived. Early catching is important.

One must have a positive attitude and NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER GIVE UP,
NEVER GIVE UP
The real cure for it is to be positive. Don't ignore it but just defy
it. Do not ever get low and dejected. Attitude is mastery of cancer.

Dan is the simple , uncomplicated, down to earth brother everyone wishes
they had.
Dan is loveable and just a nice guy.
I wish you all the best.

God bless all of you

Thanks to all who signed a lovely card from last rally and especially to
those who thought of sending a special card too.

George,

Nice to hear such an encouraging note from you; I'll bet being a tough New Yorker battling the big C helps!

George,

Kathy and I were on one of our annual or bi-annual trips to visit family in Central Pennsylvania, earlier this month. We again were able to coordinate the trip with the Hershey AACA Fall Meet, where we met you two years ago. My brother in law and I attended the show on Thursday, Oct 10. It was drizzling when we arrived and we didn't get to stay past about 2:00 PM when it really started to rain. We DID run across Bill Bryant and had a short visit with him just before leaving. He told us you were there in your usual spot, and that you were suffering from another bout with cancer. I regret I was unable to get over there to see you. We enjoyed the short visit with you a few years ago and would have liked to stop by and say high but, by that time, the rain was starting to soak through our rain coats and we had to leave. I wish you well and will add you to my growing prayer list.

*Well George, you may be the resident expert as you say, but watch your
back, I'm coming up fast ..<VBG>

*
*If it wasn't for Dan, I would never be posting this, and neither would
most of the rest of you I suspect. My problem is at the other end.
*
*About 5 years ago I experienced a dry cough. A biopsy was done locally and
as expected the results were not to my liking. I had cancer in my left
vocal cord or larynx. The first year I had 2 surgeries and drawing a fine
line between retaining the ability to speak and removing the cancer, it
appeared to have been removed.
I had routine check ups every 3 months ...but on the last appointment
they 'saw' something. Another surgery was booked and and again I thought I
was cancer free.
I was feeling so good, that I decided to once again spend the winter in
my other hometown, Las Cruces NM . It was there that I found myself with
an earache that wouldn't go away.
Attending the rally in Dothan AL boosted my spirits. ( GMC content) I
knew it was back, but meeting old friends and making new ones was well
worth a delay of 10 days or so.
*
* When I returned, I was booked for chemo and 35 sessions of radiation on
my throat . Now That is misery! At week 5, 25 sessions in, I couldn't
swallow or eat...and quite frankly, life or death didn't matter much. Some
how I was able to get enough Gator Aid and canned chicken soup (having
strained out the bulky chunks of chicken...sarcasm) in the next 2 weeks to
survive. Two months later....it's back ! I have to wait 3 months after the
last Radiation treatment before further action can be taken. That will be
mid November.

*
*So far I have spent 5 years of my life not knowing how far ahead I can
plan. Do I start a project of stretching my GMC?? Everything you say is
true, George, I've lived a fairly healthy life style...and YES, I quit
smoking 24 years ago.
*
*
*
*Now I'm afraid, not of dying because no one gets out alive, but of what
my wife is supposed to do..with my 'stuff' ! If I have a fire sale
tomorrow and sell everything at $ 00.10 on the dollar, I'll be wanting to
kick myself if I live another 20 years without my motorcycles, cars and
GMCs<VBG> If I had collected stamps instead on mechanical things, it would
be easier all round . <g>

*
*I'm also sorry to hear that insurance doesn't cover everything for you. A
guy doesn't need the added stress of finances on top of a diagnosis of
cancer. Tommy Douglas removed that weight for Canadians. Keep in touch on
or off the net, maybe we can figure out a way to take a GMC with us? <VBG>

*
*Good luck to all of you with Cancer....it changes your life forever but it
doesn't necessarily end it !

*
*Mike in NS
