My wife and I just bought a 1973 Canyon Lands and
are in the process of refurbishing the interior. I have a few questions about
that and will no doubt have others later. I was hoping that I could pick the
brains of those of you who have had these for a while. I am really impressed
with the way everyone who has a GMC motorhome seems to be so ready to lend a
hand. It seems to be more like an extended family rather than just a group of
people who happen to own the same type of vehicle.
Anyway, my question is about the insulation in the
side walls. When we removed the wall coverings in the living area we found what
appears to be black mold on the foam insuluation, I would assume from the
windows leaking at some point. The leaks have been stopped but it has left us
with a black and smelly mess. I have taken the foam with the mold off of the
sides and now am ready to replace the insulation with something before I recover
the walls. What should I use to re-insulate the walls with? Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Lane B

Lane,

Welcome to GMC ownership and to the GMCnet.

Try searching for insulation on the photo site for a lot of different options/approaches.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/index.php

Some would like to strip all the old and hire a local foam-in-place company to add new insulation. Others like to use urethane panels from Home Depot or Lowes type stores and use foam-in-can to hold the panels in place. .... I added the plastic bubble wrap insulation in areas of my 73 and it helps with the radiant heat gain from direct sun exposure.

Give a little time to your post and wait for a variety of suggestions.

Dennis

Lane,
Where'ya'at?

Look up message threads on my name from June and March of this year for discussion of insulation materials.
The foam boards I used in the Eleganza and the Solar Gard IR blocking window tint has made a huge difference compared to the foam bubble wrap in the Palm Beach.

We could be related- some bureaucrat substituted an A for a U or vice/versa a hundred and fifty years ago and planted a new family tree.

Welcome to the tribe- taste the Kool Aid in small doses.

Good luck with the project.

Lane,
We bought our '73 Canyonlands in June of 2012, it was a fixer upper. the first year was an intense barrage of rebuilding engine, suspension (front and rear), replaced all the copper water lines with PEX, added safety features like automatic fire suppression, electric brake booster, propane/smoke/carbon monoxide sensors, new windows. Then once it ran and was dry (No leaks) interior completely redone, installed Davo bunk/couch, painted cabinets, side wall Formica, pergo floor, new upholstery, shades, cabinets, kitchen, soundproof and carpet. Replaced to roof air, added second roof air. Installed eagle wheels and Michelin tires before we took our first trip in June 2013.

We lined the walls with the foil bubble wrap, and in some places where the sprayed on foam was thin we added 3/4 rigid foam insulation.

Lane,

Welcome to the group, family, cult, asylum....

One thing you should do very soon is make a sigfile that gives your name(s), a coach description and a geographic reference. This is simply to help those that might want to assist you, be more effective at doing so. There are significant variations with model and year and alterations already done.

It is also important that you not post readable phone nr.s and @ddresses. Not everybody that reads this board is vetted and some are spambots that collect that information.

About half the members read this as e-mail and can't see pictures posted. So, if you need to post pictures, either put them in the GMC or other gallery or link to them.

And, You have already noticed that this is a special group. You will also soon note that this will make the coach much more a part of your life than one might expect. I compare it to the way we watermen relate to our boats and cohorts. That is why I have taken to welcoming new owns as we would welcome a new vessel or owner. So,

May the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that set forth within her.

Welcome Lane and family

Matt
