G'day,

I decided to create a new message as it was buried in the Who is Charles Woods thread.

Jake,

I am a cheerleader for Avion's. They meet your #1 concern as they only built one year - 1975.

Here's a link to the brochure for the Sunburst and Provincial 26' models:

http://www.bdub.net/publications/Avion/Avion.htm

Here's a link to the brochure on the Provincial 26' model:

http://www.bdub.net/publications/Avion2/avion-int-261.htm

Here's a link to the brochure on the Provincial 23' model

http://www.bdub.net/publications/Avion2/avion-int-231.htm

They've got some features that are very desirable, birch veneer cabinetry, dry bath, under dinette storage, twin beds (75 in long 32
in wide), pull out table in top of dresser between twin beds, and a cook curved wall on the bath.

Rob,

I have never even heard of that model much less seen one for sale. I like
the interior shots. About the only thing I would have to say throws a red
flag for me is that both of us really want a rear bath unit. I know the two
side bath units we have looked at were not anything we were interested in.
Did they ever make a rear bath?

Jake

Jake, about a year ago we had a good thread on the length of the berths. I learned a lot from that thread and had JimB lengthen my side on the rear twin Royale as a result. I'm not familiar with rear bath models, only having been in one very upgraded RB Royale. But berth length is something that shouldn't be overlooked by prospective owners above, say, 5-10.

It just dawned on me, and somebody can correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think there was a rear bath floor plan in 73 or 74. Lots of rear bath Birchavens from 76 on.

So the only pre-1976 rear bath possibility would be a 1975 23' Midas. The rear bath Midas upfitted units had a bathtub.

Ref http://www.gmcmotorhome.com/faq/GMC23Interior.html

23 Midas with a rear bath is at the bottom of the page. Coachman upfitted 23' means 76 Birchaven and later.

Did I get that right?

And to make it harder to find, there were only 36 23' transmodes produced in 1975, don't know if all, or only some, were upfitted by Midas. Much less than a 0.28% chance of a GMC being a 23' pre-1976 rear bath.

Jake,

Nope, they only made the models shown.

So we need to filter suggestions with:

1975 model or earlier with a rear bath, correct?

Do you have a price you don't want to spend over in mind?

I know they are few and far between. There was a 75 up in San Francisco
area about a year and a half ago on eBay. I think it was like 4500.00 or
something. I would have ran up and looked closer at it but we had not sold
our unit at the time and I only had parking for one. I see them come up
about one or two a year. I guess that is the long way of saying that from
what I have experienced you are correct.

RC,

At 6'-1" and very wide shouldered I have the side bath models to be a bit
too cramped. But I do agree they should not be overlooked. It's one of the
reasons we are still going out to experience all that we can find for sale.
Also talking with as many owners as we can. We would prefer the 23' but in
all honesty I would not pass up a nice rear bath 26' for 3 feet.

Rob,

We I have enough from the sale of our last unit that should not be an
issue. That is still one of the things I am trying to keep an open mind
about. I am a hot rodder and I love to tinker, upgrade & modify. If I
found one needing work for the right price I would consider it. But I would
not have a problem paying 15-20K for a nice unit that was done the way we
want.

If it was the one in Victorville, it had a rear bath, but I was thinking it had a 403, implying it was a 77 or 78.

Jake,

I am 6'1.5" with wide shoulders and now a fat a$$. I would prefer a wet bath as there is lots of room standing sideways to take a
shower. Yes, the rest of the bathroom gets wet but if you install a large Fantastic or MAXX fan all you have to do is wipe the lid
and seat of the toilet and the sink and turn on the fan and it will dry out quickly.

BTW a dry side bath is ~60 inches front to rear; a wet bath is ~ 48 inches. Twelve inches is a lot of real estate in a GMC!

I wasn't trying to put you off the rear bath chase, Jake. My concern is that no matter which floorplan, berth length might need to be on the punchlist. At 6-1, real high on the punchlist.

>bath

The one that caught my eye was the dry bath JimB converted to a huge (by rv standards) wet bath.

Rob,

You're info makes we want to go back to a side bath and take a real
specific look at it again. The next time I have the chance to go into one
for sale I will stand in the bath area, shut the door and move around.

That very well could be the one. The pictures showed it parked on a
residential street. I think it was a yellow unit. You very well could be
right about the year. Because we were not in a position to buy yet I was
only paying a little bit of attention.

True enough, but it's worth it for me. The dry shower in my side kitchen Royale is plenty big for me (5'10", 150 pounds), and I believe it would really fit anyone who's quite a bit larger as long as they don't mind moving around a bit to dance with the water stream. And not having to dry out the bathroom when we're done with a shower is a big plus, to me (and my wife) at least.

What we DO give up are the vertical shelves by the closets - they'd certainly be nice, but we always find a place to put our stuff elsewhere (including the ample under-bed storage that the PO built in, replacing the second (!?) dinette that used to be there. AND the shower can be a pretty handy place to store large, rigid objects en route, like extra lawn chairs, without preventing access to the bathroom.

YMMV

Jake - I am 6'5" 225lbs so bed size is a concern for me too. I had a Royale (78) with rear twins. I touched, but with a couple of glasses of wine and some Ambien I slept like a baby. My concern about that coach was the lack of a living room area. We were either seated at the dinette or lying in the bed.

My present coach is a '76 Eleganza. It has a rear east/west double bed where my DW sleeps. I sleep on the dinette up front and find it very comfortable.

Reluctantly, I'll probably remove the dinette and make a box-based bed that will double as a sofa. That with 2 club chairs makes a nice living area. It will be much less trouble to set up the bed than with the dinette.

If you don't mind sacrificing "living room" area the rear bath center sofa/bed is a good option. The bed on the passenger side has no restriction on the fore end so your feet can hang off.

Wet or rear bath is probably a better option for large people than is a dry side bath.

Good luck. To me the hunt is half the fun.

Q: What is a “Roll A Long” GMC Motorhome?

Answer: The Roll A Long is a transmode with its interior up fitted by a company in Long Beach, CA. They were built in 1975 on the 26ft transmode platform. The name of the model was “Santana” and there were three floor plans offered

1. Standard model: Rear bath, twin beds, kitchen up left behind the driver’s seat and dinette behind the passenger seat.

2. Club Coach model: Swivel barrel chairs in place of dinette.

3. Sofa/Bed model: Quilted Sofa in place of dinette

The exterior had a padded Landau covering, (padded vinyl side panels), on both sides of the coach. Accent stripes and paint were optional. Also, the unit did not have the “T” skirts that most other units had.

The interior had a unique read out panel that posted read outs for the two holding tanks, two water tanks, water pump, battery condition, generator starter stop switch, hour meter and a weather monitor indicating instant weather conditions. The unit was similar to the Royale units.

Dean Washichek, GMC Saguaro Jetset, supplied this information.

26' but it looks to be a rear bath. Bonus; it's a RollAlong.

That very well could be the one. The pictures showed it parked on a
residential street. I think it was a yellow unit. You very well could be right about the year. Because we were not in a position to buy yet I was only paying a little bit of attention.

Jake
The one I am thinking about was in what looked like a vacant lot with other stuff parked around it. I offered him $3000 and he wouldn't come down from $4000. It was listed once or twice again after that. I don't know if it ever sold, but haven't seen it listed lately. Last time it was listed it seemed like the seller was eager to get it moved, but don't know if it sold. I have an email address if you want to start to try to track it down by contacting the guy I was dealing with back in January 2011.
