Newbie here. Just purchased a '78 Kingsley, our first GMC. I have known about these great machines since I was a kid when my father was interested in them new. He purchased another brand of coach and we traveled extensively while I was growing up, but I think he always had regrets for not getting the GMC. I feel as if I am fulfilling a bit of my father's desires with the GMC, but I digress. I have a little experience with the drivetrain as I worked in an Oldsmobile dealer while in school (and Toronados still had 403s then). Fast forward to 2011 and an old friend of my wife mentions that they bought a '73 Sequoia. The friend posts about their cross country exploits piquing my wife's interest. So we start looking at coaches and I found this website and other great Internet references. We settled on a '78 Kingsley with 43k original miles. This coach is nearly a one-owner as the seller purchased it in '82. I was particularly interested in this one as it is very original and pretty well maintained. A bonus was a milk crate full of service manuals and documentation. We will spend the winter going through the mechanicals and getting it into shape for travel next spring.

Congrats on the new beast. I feel like I'm still a newbie, but we've had our '76 Palm Beach for about 18 months. It has been fun to work on and we have had many great trips in it so far.

This site has been a terrific source for interest, help and amusement. You'll find no shortage of opinions. 😜

Sounds like an outstanding find! We've had our '78 Royale for about 18 months as well, and have had lots of great adventures in it. It was maintained very well by the POs and had about 104,000 miles on the chassis, but only about 4,000 miles on the rebuilt motor and transmission (which have been flawless in 10,000 miles). It's always fun when people stop by to see the coach - happens all the time (just had a drive-by yesterday by an old-timer who bought a '75 Palm Beach new, and was showing his wife and another couple what a GMC looks like).

Just stay on top of the "normal maintenance", learn the weak spots and be ready to deal with 'em on the road, and you'll have lots of great trips ahead of you. On balance, I feel more confident taking my 35 year old coach 'cross country than I would a new $200,000 rig. And it's funny that it'll get a lot more attention, too.

send me an email. I am up in St. Cloud. lqqkatjon@gmail.com

biggest word of advice, is ask for help. there are lots of opinions to sort out, but better to have some understanding of things before spending money or time on the wrong thing.

I would also suggest, to just plain use your Coach as much as possible. tear it apart too much, you might end up spending too much time and money, then be frustrated with it. there are lots of short trips to take here in MN with the GMC.

do some searches, you will usually find a quick answer to about any question.

Mr,

First - welcome to the group/family/cult/asylum.

Then we try to use real names here so we know you when we meet at a rally and we probably will.

Next, set up a sig file (see mine), with your name, a short coach description and a geographic reference. All of these have reasons. The name, I mentioned, the coach description is because there are significant variations between years and models and someone that might have good information for you needs that, and finally the geographic reference is simple because you may have help in striking distance and right now you need a friend even if you haven't met him - yet.

Oh, and don't post a clear phone nr. or @ddress, not everyone that reads the forum is vetted and some are spambots.

Lastly, but least by no means least. You have already had some response to your arrival. This is typical of the community you just joined. You will also find that the coach (and the community it brings) will become more a part of your life than you might have expected. Liken it to the way watermen treat a new owner or vessel and have taken up welcoming new owners in that style. So,

May the Good Lord Bless this coach and all those that set forth within her.

Welcome Chris

Matt

Thanks for the warm welcome all!
I'll provide you with an interesting anecdote. A couple months ago I overheard one of my co-workers explain "it's got an Oldsmobile drivetrain" and I figured he's got to be talking about a GMC. Well yes he was. He has a '73 26' painted desert. Another co-worker has a '75 26', a third just bought a Palm Beach. In a facility with 400 people there are 4 GMC owners! What are the odds of that?

Welcome to a Bright Future having entered the twilight zone of GMC Classic
motorhomes. If you are on facebook join us at Classic GMC Motorhome.
Last year a few of us embarked on a journey from Vancouver BC to Niagara
Falls, Ontario then 3 coaches continuing across to the tip of Newfoundland
and throught the maritimes entering Maine. Two coaches down through New
York (yes right down Park Avenue, through the Met Life Building and onto
Broadway with a trip through the Holland Tunnel. Gettysburg - Dollywood,
Nashville - New Orleans.
across Texas and up through Arizona to Vegas, Reno - Mt Shasta - a stop at
Jim Hupy's (rear Disc Brake and reaction arm install) then home. In 2014
we plan - with several others and you are welcome to join in anywhere along
the route - starting in Portland and following the Lewis Clarke trail -
finding our way to Detroit - Ford Museum, then Auburn Museum, the RV
Museum, Studebaker Museum in South Bend then Chicago where we start Route
66.
So you see that there are many of us who really get out there with these
wonderful machines.

Best regards
Dwayne and Sharon Jacobson
