Anyone found that GM did a good job on the ceiling insulation? I am not sure I can squeeze anything in between it and the headliner. I see why such cold air comes in around the windows, nothing there.

Dan,

My ceiling insulation looked good where it existed. Near the vents and between some ribs there was none.

It's a '76(ish) Palm Beach.

Our ceiling has a good even batch of the factory spray in. I been shooting spray stuff around windows this morning. Packed all the bubble stuff I could over the cab headliner. That should help. I think I can still squeeze bubble wrap stuff above headliner. Will give it a try.

Rained hard today while I had the ceiling out. Found out my front fantastic fan is leaking. Looked when the rain stopped and found it. Will let it dry good and seal it up.

Whatever worker was spraying in the urethane foam insulation at GM's assembly line sure did a "kiss and a promise" job.

Mine had many bare spots and some very thin spots.

Back in 1994 I bought a double tank system with several replaceable spray tips and filled my ceiling and walls. After it expanded I used a hand saw to level the foam even with the ribs. I did the whole motorhome except behind the bath module.

This made a major difference in heating and cooling the motorhome which is probably why my one 15000 btu air conditioner seems to keep me cooler than some GMCs that run two air conditioners.

If I were doing it again I would hire the job out to a company that sprays refrigeration boxes for stores and warehouses. You can usually find local companies that do this and it would probably be cheaper than the cost of materials. Be sure to cover any surfaces that you don't want foam to stick to as its almost impossible to get off Formica walls and carpeting.

Emery & Dan,
I totally agree. Our last GMC that we totally gutted had HUGE bare spots, esp. in the ceiling. We added insulation in every space available, including spraying the ceiling & walls. Not only did it stay cooler & warmer with the front unit (a/c & heat), but it also made a great sound barrier against outside noise. Sure do miss that part, as my Coachman needs the same thing, but that's not gonna happen. Have no desire to gut another coach - GMC or not! Installed thermal-backed curtains on all windows, across upper bed, plus added those insulated vent covers, & a silver insulated cover for the glass part of the door. That helps a lot, but the outside noise is still there. So if someone is going to gut their coach, I "highly" recommend adding more insulation while you can. It's worth it, IMHO (as Ken H. would say.)
Dan, your M&M's are now gone! Sorry, buddy, but that son of mine made another visit. :)
Keep up the good work, guys. Missed y'all in Branson, but we'll see ya' in Montgomery!
