I think that is the 50 amp circuit breaker between the house battery 12V system and the drivetrain 12V system.

TL wrote on Thu, 10 October 2013 17:37 | Anyone know what this relay/switch is for or does ? It has only a red wire to it and then from it routed to the driver side of coach into area under dash. Once it goes into coach under dash area I cannot locate where it is and what it is attached to. I installed the dash so good that I can't see where it comes in nor what it is attached to.

As noted it is a 50 amp circuit breaker. On your '74 the house battery is located up front. This breaker is connected between the house battery and the house circuits. It does not really go into the dash area but runs down the side of the coach to the house fuse panel located in the electrical cabinet next to the stove.

So this wire that comes off this Breaker runs the entire house 12 volt system? It is also the wire that brings the charge from the progressive converter also located near the 12 volt panel near the stove to charge the house battery way up front? Is that correct? That's sure a long way and seems like a small wire to do so much.

Steve and everyone,
This is a breaker. I just traced the wire coming from the house battery and to the breaker and from it and it does travel along the inside of the coach to the rear where my progressive dynamics power converter/charger is located. The red wire along with my converter/charger red wire are wound together and attached to the 12 volt fuse bar which powers the entire house 12 volt system. This wire apparently provides 12 volt from house battery and then also brings 12 volt charging power back to the front house battery and engine battery. I measured the volts at each point of contact including just the house battery and they all read the same 12.5 volts from front to rear. It is amazing that this one little wire is capable and responsible of handling all this with efficiency or am I missing something and it should be wired another way?? When I am plugged into shore ac power it seems like it takes a long long long time to charge the house and engine battery. The batteries got run down low once so I plugged into ac shore power and it took two days it seemed to bring batteries back up. I'm thinking the converter/charger should charge them faster than that or is this normal??

Tom,
Don't forget about E=IR -- the effect of current flow through the
resistance of the wire. If you measure the voltage at each end of a wire
carrying no current (except for the tiny amount drawn by the meter) it will
be the same. If you measure those voltages with a heavy current, like the
40A maximum from a PD-9240, there will be a significant difference. Thus,
the wire may indeed be too small for the application. On the other hand,
if everything operates normally at the "destination end", it's probably
adequate. The size of the wire doesn't really have much to do with the
EVENTUAL charge state of the battery, since the current will taper off to
nothing as the battery voltage reaches that of the charger.
