Those are about as good as you can get. Have a hot receiver and 1 watt output. I have a couple of them but rarely use since we have the Verizon. Great for pulling in a far away station and you can hook an outside antenna to them.

You are much better off with the Alfa Model AWUS036NH. THIS IS A 2000 mW 802.11b/g/n unit.

I have a 1000mW Alfa but the one I use now (the 2000mW unit) is far superior. It will pull in more signals from farther distance and give much stronger signals.
I bought two of them. One for my wife and one for me.

It was only about $10 more on the Internet than you paid to 1 SaleA Day and it is a much better unit.

I think that you will find that it is compatible with the Mac.

I have found that both the 1000mw and the 2000mw units that I own are totally compatible with my Mac. I also purchased on for my Dad and installed it on his PC and it works fine there.
You just have to have the right driver for the Mac. It is different from the PC driver that comes with the unit.

I am using a Ralink driver that I downloaded from the net.
If you need a link to find it please let me know.

I am somewhat tech but not as much as others are. What does this do?

Do you have to buy an internet service for wireless in order to make it work? If so, what provider has a good deal?

Thanks

Emery,
I found the two receivers identical on the ones I tested. If that is true then 2 watts is no better than the one watt. Extra output will get you nothing if you cant hear any better.
Now, if it is as your's tested, and I am sure it was, then yes, buy the two watt unit. I have them both. I did find the 1 watt far superior to the 1/2 watt on transmit and receive.
At any rate, these are good items if you are trying to reach out and touch a distant wifi signal. I have two comercial amplifiers that do no better than these little units.

This antenna plugs into your USB connection on your computer and you receive WiFi signals through the external antenna rather than through the built in antenna on your laptop.

You get many more sites and they come in stronger.

For example in my neighbor hood my built in antenna shows 5 wireless signals. My USB init shows 16.

The wireless utility shows the signal strength of each source and whether it is an open signal or a protected one. If protected it shows the protection method.

I used mind at the Zbranson KOA and it showed 4 antenna signals. I could choose the strongest one. My internal antenna would only show the closest one and often that was very busy so I could choose another signal that would get in the Internet faster.

When traveling I can often find an open, unprotected signal such as a motel that might be a couple of blocks or more away. I can get on the Internet through that source to get email or onto the Internet.

You guys are killing me with these deals on the internet. I bought 3 of these and 2 of the thermal detectors from Yugster. I'm not going to have any money left for the Jim's if this keeps up.

Take a look at the compressor I just posted in another thread.

I also did not buy one of these. It is fun spending other people's money just like the government.
