fuel line coming in to generator goes thru some electrical device before it goes to fuel pump.
parrts book page 28-48 shows fuel pump, but not other thing.
what is it, and can i bypass to rum genny?
for 2 days in a row generator would run for maybe hour then die. once cooled off would work again maybe hour.
i found wire on last leg and helped it along. i assume this devise is causing my generator fuel pump not to run. at first i thought it was a pump, but parts book cleared that up.
thanks

It is a fuel cut-off solenoid. Designed to allow fuel to flow only when genset is energized. Can be removed, if you wish.

Brian,
That is probably the fuel shutoff solenoid as seen on pages 30, item 42 listed on page 31 of the onan operators manual and parts catalog.
<http://www.bdub.net/manuals/Onan/Onan6kwNH_Operator-Parts.pdf>
Page 26-48 is for the 4K generator and not the 6K generator.
It is a safety device, and some have removed it, but IMHO I would not. The choice is yours.

The Onan Major Service manual is located at:
http://www.bdub.net/manuals/Onan/Onan6kwNH_Major-Service.pdf
Has a lot of trouble shooting information.
Best of luck!

Why do you think that shutoff is killing your Onan? Bypass it and report back. I suspect that may not be your problem.

This is a fuel solenoid that only opens when it has power. You can test it by removing the line to the carburetor and placing it in a suitable container, then jumping terminals 9 to 11 on the control board. The pump should run and fuel should flow,

I will be trouble shooting the same issue tomorrow. Need to test the fuel pump and fuel solenoid. Will remove fuel line from carb and jump the appropriate pins to test for fuel flow.

The weekend is finally here so I can spend some quality time with my onan. Also plan to go through the rpm/frequency setting.

my bet is on the fuel pump. Just fixed mine last weekend and it had the same symptoms. Shut off solenoid was fine, but pump was shot.

Brian,
The Onan fuel pumps are usually pretty durable and I wouldn't just rush off and replace it unless it is truly failed. Have you taken it apart and cleaned it? A lot of times if it has sat unused for long periods of time they get gummed up inside and sticks. Take the bottom cover off, it turns counter clockwise looking from the bottom, Clean the filter element with solvent and gently blow with air. Shoot some Carb Cleaner in the inlet, outlet and up into the internal and let it sit for a few minutes. Gently rap the pump body from the top with a rubber hammer. Put some power (directly from a 12VDC source) on to see if it makes noise. Put it back together and see if you were successful and it pumps.

See Figure 30 on page 25 of:
