Hi - I am attempting to remove the steering wheel and would like to not damage anything. The removal tool is cinched up as tight as I can get it and I have tapped it a couple times with a hammer. I have put penetrating oil (aerokroil) in/on the splined shaft. I will try again tomorrow.

Hahaaaa! My first thought too Emery. I have one of those GM steering column tool sets at the shop. Haven't needed it in a long time since nobody seems to steal GM vehicles anymore. :/
Could also be that the columns are a hair different now.

Sir: I have bent bolts trying to get wheels off that PO tightened. I do have a good puller and a better puller. A harmonic balancer puller with hardened bolts is best I have. Make sure it is straight, a little grease on the puller threads helps. Torque suppose to be 30 lb.

Thank you
emerystora wrote on Fri, 04 October 2013 11:49 | There is a lot of information in Section 9-41 of the Maintenance Manual.
However, I am sending you a write up that should be easier to follow. This will go to you email address.

It appears that once the puller is put on and torque is applied, the wheel should come off the splined shaft. BUT considering the coach is nearly 40 years of age, a litte more persuation may be needed. Suggestions are appreciated as I would prefer to not damage the column. I just want to change the steering wheel, not rebuild the column.

Emery,
Would you be so kind as to send us that write up as well for removal of the steering wheel. Our current wheel is cracked, we have a replacement, and it's on our to-do list.
Thank you!

Les
I have never heard of or seen a GM steering column without the clip.
Perhaps you should post a picture of what you can see to the gmcmhphotos.com site and maybe some of use could help you more.
