I am still on my way home from Branson. On my way back, I stopped at my son's place near Louisville and spent 3 long days with him framing his basement "Man-cave" and fixing various things he waits for my visits to fix. On the way back to Michigan today I started looking for "free" places to dump since I've been in my GMC 5 nights since departing the Branson rally. Thank goodness for knowing how to take "Navy Showers".

Some how during my Google search (and I remembered Craig Lechowicz telling me he had camped there), I stumbled upon the campground that FMCA owns in Cincinnati. I called and was told to come on down, no reservations, first come first served. They have very clean, 15 full hookup sites and 6 electric only sites. All free, maximum of 2 days a month for FMCA members.

I am there now with WI-FI that works and full hookups. No cable TV however, which I can live without as it's WI-FI that works I'm after. Its a very, very nice alternative to Camp Wal-Mart where I've stayed for 2 nights this trip.

Why did I not know about this perk when I pass through Cincinnati 5-6 times a year in my GMC?

I think the answer is that you don't read the FMCA magazine's fine print.
They've had that location on the east side of Cinti for some time. In fact,
a social club Bob Stockholm and I are members of is having a rally there the
first of November. It will be limited to the first 21 registrants, however.

So, do you not look for Flying J's or rest stops with dumps? I saw at least
one rolling along 44 to St. Louis. There is also one in Illinois on 64 if I
recall correctly. Alabama has several on 65. We always dump at the last rest
stop in Alabama before heading into Florida or coming back to Kentucky.

As to Camp Walmart - Camp Sam's is much quieter. There aren't as many of
them. Some Dick's Sporting Goods also welcome overnighters. Of course, you
can overnight in the front of a Flying J if you park in the RV area. Some
Cracker Barrel restaurants do the same.

Google "RV sanitary dump stations free" for an answer to what you're looking
for.

If you have a membership with KOA you can dump at any KOA while traveling at
no charge.

Even though we have had our GMC over 15 years, we have not done much camping outside of state parks, national and state forests, friends and relatives driveways etc. and the occasional GMC rally. We still have much to learn about low cost camping. I don't read much in the FMCA magazine that pertains to the style of camping we enjoy. It seems to mostly cater to big rigs. We belong to Good Sams only because we got a free membership from Flying J for some reason. I am kind of getting tired of the endless sales promotions I get in the mail since I got that "free" membership.

The problem with Flying J and their dumping is you have to pay to dump. I am to cheap to pay much to dump under 40 gallons of stuff. If I was driving a big RV, it would make me happier to dump 100-200 gallons for the price I have to pay for less than 40 gallons. Same thing with the Mackinac Bridge and the way they charge by the "axle" and not by weight.

I might be interested in paying $24 for a membership to KOA for the "free dumping". However, I looked at their site and see no mention of being able to dump at any KOA while traveling at no charge for KOA members. Must be buried in the fine print.

As a rule we don't camp at commercial campgrounds if we can help it. Seldom do we want to use their amenities (pool, game room etc.) and don't want to pay for what we don't use. 10% off camping at a KOA or ROUTE 66 RV Network parts stores would not be enough for us to pay $24/year. We already get a discount at Camping World that we don't use because it is cheaper and faster to get stuff from Amazon.

If a GMC rally comes with a KOA then I'm OK with it.

76,

If we met (and we probably did) at Branson (but I may never know), and if you had asked, I might have told you how to get all kinds of such information. There is a Discovery owners site that has lots of information like the locations of all the Cabela's and nearly all of those have free dumps. Most also welcome overnight parkers and also have potable water available. For the potable, you have to go back to the boats area that is often in the back of the building.

That is just one little reason to have a sigfile and a real name here.

Matt, that is Richard. I noticed he used two different names on two different posts. Maybe he is trying to stay incognito.
We are like Richard in that we rarely stay in a campground. I have used the Discovery web site since before we ever hit the road. Learned about it on the Escapee's forum, another great site for learning about rving.

Yep that was me. When I did the first post, I logged direct to the GMCNET with my laptop and my password manager used an old account that it had remembered from years ago that I had forgotten about. Normally when I'm out of town, when I post something or do banking etc. I VPN back to my home PC that stays logged into the GMCNET. I didn't realize that I had used an old account name until I saw the post. I do like to be incognito at times.

I'm back home now after an UNEVENTFUL and boring 1,900 miles of driving. Over 21,000 miles now on the new motor with the only excitement being the bronze distributor gear that failed during the Incident at Mile Marker 123, 13,000 miles ago.

Richard,

Then go to a Camping World to dump. I've done it. No problem. Buy toilet
paper and then ask where the dump is.

Simple.

As to KOA, I call ahead, explain the situation, give them my number and get
the OK. Communication goes a long way. It isn't in the fine print.

Richard,

If I had been driving days and needed to dump 40 gallons the $5 would seem
worth it to me.

I have a big rig. I seldom dump more than 40 gallons. Why, my tanks aren't
that big. It also means hauling more weight and getting poor mileage. That
stuff weighs.

As to the FMCA magazine, I read about one good column a month. I don't look
at the ads just like I don't look at the ads in other magazines. It isn't
because I'm cheap. It's because I have no money to spend on anything for
sale other than fuel
