I'm somewhat amused by the media (usually young reporters) refering to 70 year old folks as "Elderly". Guess they don't know that 70 is the new 50 according to studies.
Hindsight is 20/20 but Common Sense knows no bounds.

That looks like a Tom Tom. I had one that took me onto a sand road near Crystal River, Florida. I no longer use Tom Tom

The problem, according to my geography proffesor friends is, the makers buy the cheapest maps they can find - and they're not very accurate. Use the co-ordinates from the GPS and feed them to something running DeLorme or the like. An eBay GPS and older laptop can be had for not much and simply dedicated to this.

I think all the GPS's have their problems. I've heard of some with Garmin also. My Tom Tom has done some weird stuff a few times but the key thing is just not going blindly where it tells you. I'm never going to go down a dirt road or poorly maintained unmarked road in my truck...much less the GMC.

As an oceanographer and a USCG licensed captain all I can say is: GPS is great, just don't forget to look out the window occasionally.

For that reason I check for a second opinion - the iPhone. I have a Tom Tom.
Sometimes I have to decide between the two. Both have been wrong and that
includes using Google maps and not just the Apple-branded mapping app.
All are flawed, just like people.

I once helped a buddy check out a GMC in Albuquerque, NM - I was sort of, kind of going that way since I was on my way up to the Colorado wilderness to visit my son (who was living and working near the continental divide between Gunnison and Crested Butte).
The GMC was a bust (decomposing into the ground - sad, really), so I dropped him off at the airport to fly home. I hadn't driven this route in the dark, so I loaded it into my GPS phone (droid), entering Tin Cup, CO as my destination. Tin Cup is a wide spot in the road, and is the last "real place" before the camp, so it was just a quicker way (I thought) to enter a workable destination.
Anyway, the road wasn't all that familiar after a while, but I hadn't ever driven it in the dark, so I didn't think too much about it. Then it got smaller, and smaller, and finally the pavement ended. I followed the dirt road for a while, and it started getting "interesting". By this time, I figured out more or less where it was taking me, and knew that I'd have to do some serious back-tracking to get back on the other side of the mountain.
And since I was in my trusty, lifted 4WD Jeep Cherokee, I figured "just press on"... it's got to end soon. Well, no... it wasn't soon at all. I ended up going over Tin Cup Pass, which is a notorious dirt bike and ATV path, not really friendly to "real vehicles". Did some serious bolder-dodging and ultimately drove out of data coverage, so lost the map with many miles to go. Luckily (or providentially) I continued on and finally came into Tin Cup "the back way" (which I hadn't previously even known about). The locals all got quite a kick out of my GPS story, and confirmed my suspicion that I'm not too bright.

My flight instructor hated them. With his reluctant permission I took one along (a Garmin aviation model) on my first cross-country solo "just in case".
I did not want to be tempted to cheat on my navigation so I turned it on, put it out of my view in the back seat and took off. At some point I turned around to look at it and it was dark - it had shut down due to a bug in its firmware. I turned it back on "just in case" and then went back to navigating the old-fashioned way: checking what I saw outside the window against the sectional chart in my lap.
My instructor was amused to see the ground track that I had flown; I downloaded it out of the unit, printed it overlaid on a map and then showed it to him before my next lesson. Turns out I didn't do too bad by navigating the "old fashioned" way. Not only did I make it to my intended destination and back but I also didn't bust Wright-Patterson's airspace on the way!

I just put together a Google Map with a few locations on it that are I have
experienced GPS routing to have problems. Both of the points I added are
because of a reservoir that was put in through a major local road. This is
a public map and anyone should be able to add points to it. This is not
really useful in routing but could be entertaining to see where automatic
routing has messed up. BTW, I used to have an employee that built some of
the early routing systems used by the major services. The algorithms were
quite impressive given the data they were working from.

GPS can do funny things. As a ham radio operator in VA, our club did a semi-annual contet from Flagpole Knob, Va ( only place in the country with this geo name.). 3.5 miles of uphill unimproved forest road. Both Rick D and I made it up to the top in our GMCs.
Funny GPS part, the GPS tracks you to the mountain top up a road that would be difficult in a trails motorcycle. Ken B. drove over one year to join us. He made 2 or 3 tries at the track, in his 4 wheel drive truck, gave up and spent the night at Camp Wal-Mart. In the morning, he got good routing and came up on the correct road.
The GMCs with rear suspension all the way up went up the 3.5 miles of very bad road, slowed down only by the other traffic in the convoy. Coming down was tough on the brakes, by the time I hit bottom I had nothing to stop with.

Our Magellan led us away from the KOA and 6 miles down a rough 2 lane with a 3 Ton bridge just tonight. Had to cross it twice.
