My 1978 Royale has the breaker box set up that has been recently been described in another post. Box is near the "Buzz" box and has the metal rocker across the shore breaker and Onan breaker. Also a breaker for AC and finally the list one is the GFI breaker. I thik I have all of those figured out.

My rear dry bath coach (Coachman upfit) also has a breaker in the rear closet, which is part of the rear bath. I have no idea what they are for? I have been fixing everything else so I just have not got to the yet. I don't have a second AC (Yet).

Does anyone know what they are for?

Where is the one in the rear closet? Mine either doesn't have that one or I just haven't found it yet. My rear closet is above the Onan and has a hatch in the floor that gives access to the water pump, some plumbing, and the shore power cord from the inside. There is a junction box for the shore power and the Onan power, but no breakers that I can see.

The breaker in the closet is there on some 1977 and maybe all 1978. It is to provide power for running the second AC & will work only when the Onan is running. Shore power is a 30 amp system and will burn out if two AC are connected to it. Guess how I know. I now have a new 50 amp system.

Jim,
I believe I have the same set up as you do. I have a dry bath on my Coachmen center kitchen floorplan, with a breaker in the cabinet below the passenger side closet. How hard is it to convert to a 50 amp system?
Thanks

My rear closet is also above the onan. The breaker panel is on the floor towards the front of the closet. It is a square D panel with two breakers. The location would make sense that it would be tied to the onan. I understand that one switch might be for a second ac. Would the other switch be like a main breaker to accept power from the onan?

I wonder if many update to 50 amp? I know the 50 amp cable is thick and heavy. I wonder how it would fit and work in the compartment? When I update the buzz box I would likely replace woth a unit that could handle 50.

I updated the electric in my other antique RV (1968) from 20 to 30 to add AC. I would have to think about how to do the GMC given the separate breaker boxes.

Back before 50A service became widely available, folks did a lot of
odd-ball things to handle two A/C's from 30A service: Some had selector
switches to run one or the other. There was even an automatic switch that
toggled back and forth between the two A/C's on a schedule.

My solution for the '90 Airstream LandYacht was to put the rear A/C on a
completely separate 20A circuit, with its own breaker box and external
cord. That worked very well without requiring the use of a cumbersome 50A
cable. It would be trivially easy to do on the Coachmen with the second
connection to the Onan. After getting stuck in one campsite with only a
50A socket, I made a 50A to 30A & 20A splitter in a small tool box. That
later proved very useful since many of the 15A sockets won't even supply
that -- my nice solid 50A-connected source never let us down even with both
A/C and everything else electric running.

Ken,
Thanks for the insight. I like the idea of a speperate panel for the second AC with a dedicated 20 amp circuit. I could rig it up to run from onan or the secondary shore power. I also like the splitter idea to carve out 20 amps from a 50 amp connection.

When I upgraded my truck mounted camper I put in a speperate breaker box fed with 30 amp service and then did a dedicated 20 for the AC and a speperate 20 amp breaker to feed the rest of the the camper.

I am in no rush for the second AC as there are many things ahead of it on the priority list.
