What's the latest skinny on a back-up camera? Wireless, or wired? Any new models out there that you have used? With the ceiling out, I'd like to pre-wire if I need to.

Thanks,
John

Run coax and use a wired system, since you have headliner down. You can build your own system, that is what I did. My camera is first thing I turn on and last thing I turn off.
Send pics of your ceiling. Teri and I are about to rip ours out.

I put in the largest PEAK wireless system. My son's Advance sells them.

It's OK. The image blacks out then starts back every 5 minutes or so. Almost a flicker. Also it's not quite as clear as I'd like. The screen is not non-glare and when I had it mounted down low it was not usable. I made a mount that hangs off the rear view mirror mount and now it sits up just above the mirror. I've got it on a switched circuit.

I like it but expect there are better options.

Do be cautious using a wireless system. Since all of them are sharing a limited piece of spectrum, several cameras that are transmitting at the same time, will interfere with your receiver. Reports exist of driver's using the backup video, but unknowingly receiving an image from some other coach.
If I had my ceiling down, I would run at least one dedicated coax cable the length of the coach. I would also consider running some 12v lines, just for future use.

I am in the middle of restoring and still have the walls and ceiling open. Trying to remember everything that I might want to rough in before I close it up.

What would I need to run from the cockpit to the rear for a backup camera?

Coax and 2-#14 wires?

thanks in advance. J

This may still be a good guide to installing a wired back up camera.

With the ceiling and walls exposed definitely use a wired system. There will not be any interference and you will have a clear picture. I used two cameras, one for rear view which is on all the time with the monitor in the rear view mirror the other camera comes on with the back up lights and uses the 7" double din display of the receiver system in the dash. The back up camera is aimed so that the view is from the rear bumper to about 15 feet back. Use a high definition camera and monitor.
Run two coax cables and a hot and ground wire, you can pick up the power for the back up camera from the back up lights

So far John, the best one I've seen is the Voyager. Large display and a
very impressive range. I believe they make a model with more than one
selectable viewing angle. Excellent picture on the monitor.

Simple ruile of thumb - double all hidden wire runs. Sooner or later you'll be glad you did.

I installed two cameras for our adventure. One is to keep an eye on the toad and what is behind me. Also great for helping in backing when the toad is not attached. This one is hard wired. The second camera is in the toad. It is wireless. It keeps an eye on the brake actuator and pedal and also lets me know for positive that the gear shift is in neutral and the emergency brake is not on. Also lets me have a look at what is happening with the steering. This whole set up was less then $100. Ideally, would be nice to have one in each direction from the coach. Then if you could tie them into the landing lights and be motion activated with digital recording, that might be reassuring. I found the 'stuff at

So If I run two coax cables to the rear with 2 power wires and one ground, and 1 coax under the hood someplace with a power and ground wire, Using on off switches for each I should be good to go?

Looked up a few cameras and the wiring does not look like standard coax cable. should that be a problem?

I really don't have the cash to buy a back up system right now.
So just looking to get some wires in to continue on.
Thanks j

Joe, the coax cables you want to run are AV cables for video cameras with RCA jacks on each end, not TV or CB antenna coax cables. No need for on off switches on these.

Thanks Donald. on the cables. If I want to put the camera on a switch so I can use it all the time , would I not need a switch and a power line from switch to camera?
