Contact manny. At least have him involved with the local trans people to ensure they do it right.

It may not need a new trans. Maybe something broke and spilled the oil. Usually a trans will give some kind of warning.

If it turns out the transmission is toast Jim B may have one of manny,s rebuilds in Florida he could ship. Remember its not a vacation but an adventure when travelling in a GMC. Is the music festival on all weekend?

I think it's toast lots of smoke coming out of the dipstick tubes. Mountain view looks like a nice place to holiday for the weekend though. Just might be a little dry.

Trevor and family.

Sorry to hear of your problem. Don't think I would have tried state rt.66. What gear were you in? Don't lug the engine and trans under 2000 rpm be it in Drive, Super or low gear.
Call Jim Bounds. He stocks Manny trans. and can advise you.

Hope things work out.

Hate to hear of your tranny problems Trevor.

However, there is a bright side. Replacing the tranny with a good Manny Troavo transmission NOW will be a world cheaper and faster than having a problem once you have the coach down under. I shudder to think what it would cost to ship and import a transmission from the US later.

What a fantastic bunch of people we have met through this.
Cecil the mechanic has driven us around town and given us a personal tour and dropped us at his favourite cafe for the best steak sandwich I have eaten.
We then went to a place that has cabins near the town square and they have given us a room for thursday night free but are booked out Friday
And Saturday.
I then walked back to the coach and called nick at applied
And a new tranny should be here Monday
In the meantime Cath and Harvey went looking for further
Accommodation and came back with a room in a nice bed and
Breakfast tickets to a Gomer Pyle and Patsy Cline show and
A free loan jeep for us to explore the district in.

Gotta love America
Thanks to all

Trevor,
Make sure that they flush the transmission cooler lines and cooler thoroughly. I blew a transmission in January of this year leaving for Florida. It happened only 20 miles from the house. I had Cinnabar do the R&R of the transmission and they used a flush kit for cleaning coolers as I have both the radiator and an external cooler on the transmission .

Sir: if the mechanic unhooks the final drive you can leave it and the axles in the coach when he removes the tranny. Saves some time.

I read the manual and it says to remove the final drive with the trans so you are saying it is possible to remove the trans by itself.

The shop we are at has agonist large enough to be able to work on this up in the air so that makes it easier. We cannot do anything until the trans arrives as we don't want to block the use of his hoist.

Also I forgot to order gaskets etc what other stuff will I need to make sure we have to do this changeover as quickly as possible

I would think if you call Manny and explain the situation. he will tell that shop how exactly to exchange that transmission properly, and in the best manner for long term reliability.

I would also think that applied would send needed pieces with the transmission they send out, and would offer that mechanic the step by step instructions as to a tranny swap.

I would think if they know you are stranded, and on a mission, that they would have no issues helping you out no mater where you are spending your money to get it done.

same goes for Jim Bounds.

if there is any question from the mechanic, put him in touch with an expert that has changed out multiple of the transmissions in the coach. I would believe even the mechanic would take that sort of advice, if it saves him any extra wrenching, back strain, grease on their hands, or busted knuckles.

Mate,

BUGGER!

When the new trans arrives have it filled with Mobil 1 full synthetic trans fluid, that's what Manny recommends. It is available
from Napa.

BTW don't bother bringing the dud back to Australia, I have a spare and so does Mark Bennett.

Regards,
Rob M.

Actually, I called Manny about what fluid to use after I spilled mine during the install a couple months ago. He said synthetic on the switch pitch but dino on a regular tranny.

When it arrives, check for the shipping time. If Jim paid for expedited shipping and you did not get it, he can get a refund from the trucking company and refund some of the shipping to you.

Trevor,

Just got around to this thread. Sure sorry to hear of your misfortune --
but those who say you're better off getting the Manny Tranny installed
before going down under are probably correct. At least you seem to be well
entertained there. That's one of my favorite parts of the US too.

I agree with those who say leave the final drive in the coach -- especially
after having recently helped Manny with several swaps. Just leave the
axles connected to the FD; they'll support it after it's slid forward to
disengage from the transmission. Do not drain the FD fluid. After the
large lateral bolt (into the bracket on the engine block) at the top
forward end of the FD is removed, the FD will be free to slide forward --
after the FD-Transmission flange bolts are removed, of course. There is
one bolt in that flange which may drive your mechanic nuts if he's never
done a 425 before. It's beneath the manifold, almost around to the engine
block and can only be turned 1/6 of a turn at a time -- and that only with
a curved box end wrench (like an old fashioned "starter wrench") -- a 9/16'
wrench hot bent about 45* near that end is needed.

Another frustrating bolt, especially for installation, is that securing the
"sheet metal" rear engine mounting bracket to the transmission at the top
on the driver's side. It has taken me 45 minutes just to install that one
bolt. Manny does it much more quickly by using a 3/8" air ratchet.

When reattaching the final drive to the new transmission, be VERY careful
of the gasket between the two; it's far too easy to tear it and the leak
will be awful. A stud installed in one of the bottom bolt holes, from
which a cap screw was removed, will help guide the FD onto the transmission
shaft splines.
