I wonder how secure our door locks are. I know that they aren't vulnerable to slim-jim un-locking. The reason for this is that my local Fremont police blotter included a notice about a vehicle break in that has me worried - the criminals are getting bold.
Auto Burglary
During the night unknown suspects burglarized a vehicle that was parked on the front lawn of a residence on Third Street in Niles. The vehicle was ransacked, but the only item taken was a bag of elephant dung that the vehicle owner had received as a gag gift. Appears they may have thought it was a bag of marijuana. We assume they must have been pretty shocked by the surprise!

When burglars broke into 7 rv's at the storage lot, they used a crow bar or large pry bar. Most of the door locks snapped easily.
The GMC door popped open.

I have seen a GMC with a dead bolt installed on the door. Not sure how that would hold up to a crow bar?

Electric fence charger...three very thin wires. One across the door opening about a foot inside the door about shin high. A second one about neck high from the fridge to somewhere across the entrance. A baggie of Paprika on the kitchen counter as bait.
Third wire on a non conductive floor. Plastic on the floor might make cleanup easier.

Gene,
I reckon audible alarms are a waste of money, unless there's a cop around.
I don't know about you but there is no way I would approach any vehicle with the alarm going off, the perp might be inside.
In this day and age in the USA it is quite possible you'd get you're a$$ SHOT!
Come to think of it I wouldn't do it in Australia either.

Rob M.

I saw a door alarm installed in a GMC
came from the dollar store, for a dollar,
http://www.dollartree.com/Window-and-Door-Alarm-System/p184790/index.pro
I think it was done by
John Chalfant for his 1978 Birchaven
maybe he is on here
often a very loud noise is better protection

Choose the correct travelling companions and breakins are no worry.

At home, we put the coach in the backyard inside the dog fence. They go check if they hear something. They have real good hearing.

YOU ARE RIGHT
often it does not take much to stop an intrusion
- a flashing led might do it
- car alarms do not call the police
- alarms call attention not the police
- and dogs barking do much more good than their teeth do :>)

Kuvasz. Or kuvaszok if there's a bunch of them. The Hungarians can't pluralize for beans. If you show up in Gadsden, you'll meet that one most likely. WE always meet outside the coach and then go in together. Particularly if we're in a strange place and he's never met you. They meet people well on neutral territory.
I've a presentation on dogs in RVs I was gonna offer TPTB for Branson till scheduling killed my chances of going. P'raps another time.

I am probably going to have a break in after saying this.
I am a believer that alarms help. you are never going to stop the "professional, determined thief"... however most thiefs are cowards, and do not want any difficulties.
I think the best is signage. let them know it is alarmed. or get a large real looking stuffed animal dog that lays on passenger seat , and put a "beware of dog" sign in the window.
an alarm is not going to help you with a broken window, or a busted door in the end. but the sound will usually make then scatter.
But I am with Rob, stay back if the alarm goes off. property is not worth any confrontation.
I work in low voltage industry and know alot of alarm people. they will tell you that they do not really deal with many situation where an alarm is installed, and they have break in's. however they get business when the neighbor gets broken into who does not have the alarm, and calls the number posted on the sign of the house that did not get hit.
not every case, but I would say the majority.
our best thing we have at work to secure our copper cable, is some remotely monitored security cameras. they cost like $2500, and $80 a month. pretty spendy. But we arm them like an alarm at the end of the day. then if motion is detected, it gets instantly sent out to a 24/hour monitoring station. they look at it and see if it is a "legit" deal, and call us, and the police. it is a silent deal. cameras are wireless, and look like fake cameras.
we have caught some offenders once. plenty of false alarms(our own employees not shutting them off). and one time the stupid police got there about 5 minutes after the crooks left the scene.
I have seen an alarm trigger hidden pressure switch under a door step mat. so it goes off before the crook tries to break in.

Jon -
Check with Security Camera World. We put four camera systems with recorders at our RF plants. They're less than $500, have motion detection, and callout. We have i.p. connectivity to our sites, it's cheaper than monitoring and we need it anyway. A couple of gentlemen up at Alto, Ga will tell you how effective the system is at catching people trying to steal the cables coming off the genaset if you go on Visiting Day and ask them. The machine outcall till they are told to stop. It takes but a moment to go start the computer, start a browser, and pull up the display. And not much longer to call the copshop for that jurisdiction. My stuff is at the end of dirt roads which gives the police time to get there before the crooks leave.

Don't worry about it for a second. You will only lose sleep on this. If
they want in, they will get in even if you wrap the coach in chains. Chose
your storage area wisely. Many of the good ones, and good means they cost
a bit more, have security cameras lighting. Other than jail, there is not
much that stops a vandal or a thief.

ours are spendy, because they are 100% wireless and mobile.
runs 5 years on lithium batteries. 3 cameras and a key pad.
We move them from jobsite to jobsite. slap them on to a light pole or something.
call the dispatch and give them the address/location we just set them up at.(or the cops get sent to the last place address we called in)
when they call the cops, they also email me a 15 second video clip.
you are right, they are great. I think word gets out too after someone got caught. no one has messed with us since. used to be quite common.
