Does anyone know what the stock power steering valve specs are?

I mean number of shims in the pressure relieve valve and or the fittings orifice diameter?

And anything else that the PO could have changed...

Just trying to return my power steering to stock.

Thanks

What are the symptoms that make you think it is not stock? The box could have been changed with a different ratio, different stops, center off the high point, and also caster can change the load on the box.

Sir: the ones I haven taken apart had either 1 or 2 shims mostly 2. Removing shims raises pressure.

Thanks for the shim count Sir, there is 1 shim in my valve.

Hal,
The reason for this is to make my steering as perfect as possible.
I know the pump on the coach had been replaced at least once, so I don't know if it's valving is correct.

Also It seems to have somewhat heavy steering compared to other coaches I've driven. So something must be different.

So far I have;
Adjusted the steering box per the FSM
Adjusted the camber and caster, only 1.5' caster.
replaced the pump using the valving that was on the current pump which was the same as was on the new pump anyway.

It is better than it was, but I like things perfect and am willing to work at it till they are.

I kinda have the same issue. After rebuilding stuff a few times my steering was tighter, drives good but a little tighter than I would like to have. The only thing I can contribute it to is maybe the high pressure hose I had made at Royal Brass. Fits great but I don`t think it is the same id.

Power assist "feel" is conrolled by the torsion bar in the box. Bob Drewes started a thread on this.

interesting but not a lot of help as it doesn't list the GMC and I doubt the steering box has been changed.

Also the power steering flow orifice also controls on center feel.
I did find some rock crawler guys that increase the valve size so they can steer their trucks over the rocks with 33inch mudders...

So my goal now is to determine the correct orifice diameter, the one I have has a .128" orifice..
The rock crawler guys say the max is 5/32 or .156. But they also say that size is scary sensitive on the highway...

One idea is to open it way up then use a heidts adjustable flow restrictor to adjust it, but that flow valve is made for light little street rods and it may be too restrictive at any setting.

I wonder if Jim Shea has any information on this?
