Noob question:

Do the inner bearings fail due to not getting enough grease? It appears the new greaser inserts grease from the front and back?

Are there many failures if the standard fittings are greased properly?

Probably.

So there is an inner zerk as well? It wasn't shown on the chassis lubrication diagram I saw, it just showed the two outer fittings.

Early models had an inner zerk. The way they were made there was no way to get grease to the inner bushing without it (the center of the pin was solid, so no path for grease to get from one end to the other).

No, there was never an inner Zerk. The 73 models had a single hole in the pin which made it difficult to get grease back to the rear bushing.

74 and later model had a hole near the front bushing and a hole near the rear bushing. However often the grease would come out at the front and not move to the rear. That was why the bogie greaser kit was made with two zerks on each pin. This forces grease to the rear bushing.

Anyway, the greaser works by restricting the grease path from one of its zerks to put it into the rear hole, and the grease from its other zerk to the outer hole.

I don't think there are many failures if you keep them greased I grease my 74 every 3000 miles. I used to raise the coach and wiggle the wheels with a shovel but don't do that any longer. Just pump the gun til I see grease come out the back.
