As you might know I bought Olga in Berlin and drove her 500 miles homes without doing anyting to her, and did not have any problems.
Now I never drove a gmc or any other american car before, so I have not much reverence. But I was not impressed with her agility, she drove fine, but took her time to get going.
As we took apart the distributor, we found that the pins( mecanical advance) were worn down to a fraction of their original size, ready to brake at any time ( but not on that trip) and obviously the advance was not working as it should.
We also found that vacuum modulator was stuck solid.
So we chanced the pins and springs and the modulator, changed vacuum to manifold ad adjusted ignition ( we already added new sparkplugs, caps and leads.)

Behold: Now the engine shows no vibrations at idle with 700 rpm and make wheelspins on the lawn

Congratulations on your "cheap engine upgrade"! Good troubleshooting, too!

Being impressed with the agility of any 12,000 pound, 26 foot long vehicle is very much a relative thing... compared to ANY car, our coaches are hopeless pigs. Compared to other motorhomes, they're virtual sports cars (well, assuming the suspension is healthy).

I have to believe that the GMC is the perfect choice for a "full feature motorhome" in Europe. I really can't imagine driving anything bigger there.

Appie,

The dash slide control that activates the compressor, (the one that you put in "recirc") with contacts in it that are supposed to apply power to the compressor circuit when in the "AC" setting and the Defrost setting.

If the compressor does not come on when the slider is in those positions, the contacts are probably corroded or something. Since it comes on in "Recirc" mode, everything else in the circuit is working, and the problem has to be in that control mechanism in the dash. No need to mess with it if you are happy with the AC and Defrost functions now. If you need better defrosting in the winter, you could take the control unit out and clean up the contacts.

What were the symptoms? I will take a look at my "spare" dash control to see if/how the pin at the end affects the slider on the contacts. Right now I can't visualize how it has any effect.
