On our 78 Royale. The dash A/C wasn't performing like I thought it should. But the compressor was fine. The head pressure was way to high. I noticed the temp on both sides of the dryer were too different from each other. I put a new dryer in. ( I found that the filter inside the dryer was plugged. As I cut it open to see. )Pumped the system down. Then charged it with R 12 for now. Going to Dura Cool soon. Head pressure came down. But still to high. My fan wasn't pulling in enough air in to get rid of the heat. So off to get an American made Hayden fan clutch. There are 3 listed in the clubs parts book. Standard duty # 2705, Heavy Duty # 2747, then Severe Duty # 2797 that is listed as RECOMMENDED. I bought all 3. Then went home to play by comparing the performance of all 3. The results was VARY clear by reading my gauges that were attached to my A/C unit. The outside temp was 92. The humidity was at 69 percent. Readings were taken at idle. That's heat load. The Standard
duty # 2705 wasn't as good as my used one. That one should be removed from the list. Heavy Duty # 2747 fared better. But still lacked at these extremes. The severe duty # 2797 made the grade. In short.. Before you replace that compressor. Put in a new dryer, and #2797 fan clutch. I learned the HARD way.

If you have it charged with factory correct R12 why would you want to switch to duracool? I'm sure the severe clutch is doing what it should at idle. But did you road test? Might be too engaged at speed and be a real mileage hog.

I went through three 2797 and two 2747 clutches a while back before I gave up on Hayden. In talking repeatedly to Hayden engineering I finally discovered that they had reduced their turn on temperature and were proud of that fact. The engineer from Hayden that I was working with tried to get me to modify the clutch but I refused and returned the 7th and last one. If they had told me that up front I would have saved a lot of time and effort wasted on their clutches.

If you can not get yours to turn off on the road, get an AC Delco clutch and be done with it.

The point of the e-mail and testing. Was to make people aware that the dryer, and clutch fan can be your problem. Not the compressor. And wasn't to recommend any brand. It was to see if the more expensive units are worth the money. And their performance. I wanted to try a Delco. But couldn't find one on hand. Yes. I did a road test. At 70, I had lots of air flow at that speed.. And they all seemed to perform properly. Plus, I couldn't use the gauges at 70. A/C problems show up more in traffic. Not so much at 70. So. The thing that I would suggest is. Clear the condenser and radiator, Check that the fan clutch is pulling lots of air at idle. Replace the dryer. If all is well. And still no cold air. Get a compressor with the proper pulley size. As far as the Dura Cool. I have lots of R-12. Some say it cools better then R-12. I now have both on hand. I just want to try it.

John,
I conducted some pretty thorough testing of various fan clutches and one
of the results I found was that when disengaged, the Hayden 2797 actually
rotated at a smaller percentage of engine rpm when disengaged than all
others, yet matched all the others when engaged.

As far as the dryer goes any time there is a temperature drop across it consider it plugged for sure. If you have the R12 I would use it till I ran out Duracool is good and I use it in one of my cars but I still use R12 in the GMC as it works just fine for me. I have been using Hayden 2797 clutches for a long time when they go bad back to Pep Boys for a new one lifetime warrenty is good. The last couple were pretty noisy when engaged this last one isn't as noisy but you can hear it.also it engages at around 210 degrees or so.
