Are any of you gearheads coming to the Petit LeMans? Spectator or participant?

Haven't been since the Porsche did a backflip in front of us on the back straightaway. Spectacular.

76 Birchaven - "Wicked Mistress" - New engine, trans, alum radiator, brakes, Sully airbags, fuel lines, seats, adult beverage center... those Coachmen guys were really thinking about us second hand owners by including that beverage center... Columbia, SC.

One of many 'fun moments' at the track. Personally, I like the Mitty - watch a bunch of very rich amatuers flog milluions of dollars of ireeplaceable iron around. Or, back in The Day, watch the FF guys in their hand grnades at the Runoffs. Where there's maybe a second or at the most two difference front to back of the field. Go or blow it up.

Joe,

Me and a bunch of my buddies from Hamilton Standard were at Road Atlanta in 1974 when the Porsche Can Am cars blew the doors off
everything.

I was positioned about 3/4 of the way down the back straight when a gust of wind got under Denny Hulme's McLaren and it did a 180
flip right in front of me; I could see EVERYTHING on the bottom of the coach when it hit 90 degrees on the way to 180. He hunkered
down under the crash bar and when they turned it over he got out and walked away.

Spectacular crash with a great outcome, the car wasn't that badly damaged either.

Regards,
Rob M.

Heh. They don't make them like they used to. The carbon fiber on the Porsche shattered on impact. Driver walked away, but I'm sure the suit was soiled. Very Happy

This is the type of event the GMC was made for...no way it will be ready for this year, but next year...

It's a great track except for the red clay that gets on everything! My wife and I went down there for the SCCA Runoffs back when Michael Andretti was racing Formula Fords. His dad was world F1 Champion at the time, and he was watching the race right behind us. Oh, and next to him was one of those movie folks, Paul Newman!

Have great memories of the track. It was quite the sight before they put the chicane in the main straight as the drop under the bridge leading into the final turn was quite a spectacular spot to watch.

I also hope to be able to take my GMC to more races as time permits. Work has still been getting in the way!

Newman was an interesting guy. You could sidle over and as long as the conversation was racing, he was Everyman. If someone showed up looking for autographs or pictures however, he'd excuse himself and quietly disappear into his SOB. Racer through and through.
A friend holds the speed record down the hill solo we think. He fell off his scoot just when it topped the hilland started down. Nothing broken, but he sure beat up his leathers. I think Mark Donahue still owns the absolute lap record, and since the chicane was added, it';s unlikely anybody is gonna topp it.
