[GMCnet] Shifter cable seized [message #219309]

Netters

Does anyone has an easy way to lube the shifter cable.

It seized from just sitting since April when I got back from my winter in
the cold Southwest .
I removed the cable and got it free in it's casing ...now how do I lube
it so that it doesn't cause a headache again ?

No idea of the official answer, but I would try using the graphite lubes, used in bicycle cables.

Hi Mike

if you can detach the high end you can form a "funnel around it with modeling clay or plumbers clay and fill that with some of your favorite penetrating oil. Let it soak down inside the cable. That should free up rust in the inside of the cable. However, I see that you already have the inside cable out. In that case you don't have to form a funnel around it as the penetrating oil should flow down freely.

Rinse it well with mineral spirits to get the rust particles out.
Then grease your cable well with a moly disulfide based grease. You could also use a graphite product but with the interior of the cable being rusted a moly grease should work better.

There are kits for lubing similar cables (motorcycle for instance) that allow you to force cable lubricant into the housing. Here's one example.

Most of those kits are for lubricating it when you cannot get the center cable out. Mike said he already have the center cable out so he doesn't have to force any lubricant down along the cable which is what those kits are designed to do.

Mike,

It is the bottom end of those cables that rusts in place. Disconnect both ends of the cable and you can slide the center of the cable way past it's normal travel. Then lube up the extended cable with anti-seize. The anti-seize will provide a coating to minimize future rusting on the bottom end. You could do the top end also but that is not the area that usually rusts.

How about never seize?. I am using it more and more. I put it on my torsion bar bolts and they are like velvet. (wondering, not a guarantee)

I removed the cable but don't see a way to separate the inner cable
from its casing, so I will be soaking and dripping lube between the sliding
parts (sorry for being so technical) until I run out of oil or it drips out
the other end.
As a life long fan of anti seize, everything I own usually gets slathered
in the stuff.

Tape a funnel to one end and put oil in it, the funnel and hang it with a container under it.oil shoul flow thru it.

Should be a lot more gooder to do this(Get one from JimK, I had to when my flashover allowed the covering to penetrate thru to the inside), comes with lubricant and you wont have to worry about it rusting up again...

G'day,

In Sydney have one of those kits and it is for M/C cables which are about 1/8" OD, I wouldn't order one as I doubt it will fit our
shift cable which (from memory) is 3/8" OD.

There is a rubber seal around the end of the cable but it isn't leak tight and you won't 'force" lubricant down the inside of the
cable the seal keeps the spray lube from squirting out all over the place.

You can make your own cable lubricant. Dissolve a moly grease (Synpower, Durablend, Caterpillar Desert Gold) in Acetone or MEK and
put it in a plastic ketchup squeeze bottle and squeeze it on the end of the shift cable that's attached to the lever on the steering
column. Keep doing it until you see black drips coming from the end on the tranny. Probably a good idea to move the cable from Park
to L back and forth as you squirt in the lube. The Acetone / MEK evaporates leaving the Moly on / in the cable.

Just be sure to shove the cable all the way down in it's casing and coat it with anti-seize. The bottom end is where the water gets splashed into it and where it eventually rusts.

I do not care what you do about lubricating the rest of the cable. Choose a lubricant that you like or nothing at all. If the lubricant you choose has any ability to run, it will drain out of the cable over a few weeks any way and you will find it on the floor under the coach.

The cable has been freed, lubed and works Extremely well.
In fact, when I made my first shift with the 'new' cable, it was so easy
that I almost pulled the shift lever out of the steering column <VBG>

What works for me on various cables: Find a nurse who can get you a 3-6 cc syringe. Cut the needle end off, use fuel hoses of appropriate size and hose clamp the syringe barrell in place on the cable. You place the solvent of choice or oil afterward in the syrynge and use the plunger to presurize the cable. If you leave some air room and punp it, it will go.

I use those, too. You can get a box of oral-app syringes from most pharmacies --no needle to cut off. They also work well as micro-caulking guns for laying sealant in a fine line. For larger capacity I buy those horse-needle 'flavor injectors' from the cooking utensil section at Walmart.
