Returned from inaugural trips - much learned, much yet to be fixed! Threw the alternator belt about twenty miles from home, despite the AC belt squealing every time it cycled for 200 miles. Drove it home before battery gave up, didn't even stop in the rain to check when I heard it go.

So, do I have to remove the fan or shroud to replace the three belts?

PS I found the great charts on belt part numbers and stuff (have not gone to parts store to see what I get yet) on the forum, and the manual does not mention removal of fan, but a quick look on an earlier date under the coach didn't look like room for belt to slip by.

Tyler, there is almost always room (barely) to squeeze the new belts
through. Try several places in the upper part of the shroud. Jwid

Many have been able to squeeze the belt between a fan blade and the shroud. I haven't been that lucky and have chosen to remove the 4 little nuts holding the fan in place. It's fingertip work for me, but thinking back on it I might have be enable to do it easily with one of those ratcheting box-end wrenches.

Not to start a pulley war, but I am very happy with my dual pulley on the alternator. I got it and a matched set of belts from Jim K. Pushed the power steering pump out as far as it would go, wrapped the belts and tightened up.

I absolutely agree with Dan on this. If you can swing the extra $$, this is the way to go. It makes working on ANYTHING on the front of the engine MUCH easier.

I like the two piece idea, but $'s are going to dependability, not ease so far.

I have a set of the ratcheting box wrenches, that should be easier if I need to pull the fan, thanks...

Spent three hours trying to find a local belt fatter than the Gates. The forum warnings say that they are labeled 9.5, and the the ones I purchased are labeled 10 mm. So, they are not 9.5 but not 11. Sigh. Autozone, CARQUEST, Advance, OReilly, all had Gates or cheapo house brand, GMC dealer was no help at all, PepBoys said they carried Dayco but would be a day or two and the other lengths we compared to were still 10mm. Called Napa, they said their's was made by Gates. Guess I have to order Goodyear.

I charged the batteries with a trickle charger in order to restart and get it out of the street from its arrival!

Best idea.

You can often find a spot in the fan shroud where there is room to get the belt around the blades, one at a time. If you do take the shroud off, there is an excellent guide in the photo library on modifying it by splitting in half anad adding tabs to hold it back together. Ken Henderson's I believe.

Tyler,

Your belt buying efforts mirror my own. If the engine were not hot and running at road speed. I though for a moment to look in the log book. After all, it is right in front of me....
Problem (to be corrected soon), I didn't record the belts that I put on after the last change driven by the A/C belt leaving when the clutch bearing seized.

Another real "GotCha" is that some manufactures have changed the width of belts and not assigned a new part number. I just had this trouble with another. I took in the old belt and we compared them. No Match...

From what I remember, there is a flat spot on the shroud that is flat.
Find that spot and work around that slot.
By the way, Gene, you know we stock those two piece fan shroud, so you need not wait.

And now for the power steering pump tightening...
So, I have three Goodyear belts that are 11mm(7/16) all sitting loose in the pulleys. I got them on by working past each blade with each belt in a slightly bigger gap on the upper driver side of shroud.

Been reading, and everyone says don't crank the power steering pump over by pressing on the body of the pump...well shoot I can't see what other options with the brackets that nearly surround it. I tried a crowbar and a ratcheting strap on the pulley shaft that extends to the front, but still not convinced it is tight enough. Is there a technique? I am going to just crank alt and ac with crowbar from top once ps is tight.

After I changed to a double pulley, this was a whole easier for me than the crow bar
