I did some looking on line to see what's available.

Looks like I'll be using the Valvoline synthetic 75w-90.

thanks for the input.

John Beirski recommended thicker than 90W synthetic if I could find it for the 3.21. I ended up with 80-140. Love the fact that the synthetic rear end lube doesn't stink like the dino dope does.

Kerry,

What brand 80-140? Where did you buy it?

Rob,

I saw the Valvoline synthetic 80-140 on the shelf at
Carquest auto stores.

Check the Valvoline website for Product specs.

When Jim K shipped me my 370 differential he included some 75/90 amsoil with it. The last time I replaced the oil I asked the Amsoil dealer which oil he recommended as I couldn't remember what weight I had been using and he said the 80/140 would be better. I called Jim after I bought the thicker oil and he said either would be OK.

Since our gears are the Spiral Bevel gears, you need not go to higher viscocity like the 140.
Ford and others that ar using a Nypoid Gear require them as there is more sliding action of the gears.
Hypoin gears can run higher temperature because of the design.
The World Speed ecord GMC ran 60-90 weight Synthetic.

Question: In the final drive, can the internal carrier be flipped like a VW, thus reversing the input shaft direction?

IMO, any of the brand name gear lubs will work just fine. I'd be inclined to stay away from the 140 weights if you live or travel in the Northern regions during the fall, winter or spring months. IMO just a little to heavy for those temps. Personally, since it is only about 2 qts, I spend the little extra and run the Amsoil Severe Gear 75W90, and check it before each major trip. JWID

Johnny,

Seat of the pants answer - nope - not enough room - get out your Parts Book 78Z and take a look.
