Ran across this on another site.

Anybody remember complaints about TORO drive train reliability?
Not counting tranny failures from twin turbo Caddy engines.

As I recall, the Oldsmobile Toronado FWD drivetrain used in those GMC
coaches was not exactly renowned for its reliability. ;-)

The time mine failed, it was my fault. Lack of adequate amounts of transmission fluid will kill any transmission. Operator error, or as said in the R.A., headspace and timing problem.

I had a '79 Riviera, which moved onto the Toronado and Eldorado chassis the year after the power train in our coaches was dropped. Mine had the 3.8 litre (Buick's spelling) turbo V6. It was a real piece of crap in almost every way. The waste gate would stick open regularly. I sold it at about 60k miles and doubt it made it to 100k.

The older Toronado power train must be more reliable or there wouldn't be nearly as many GMC's on the road as there are.

The TH400 and TH425 were the most durable transmissions of the era. So if you consider that unreliable, then so be it. The Riviera of 79-85 was down sized and used the TH325 4L as a downsized weight saving version w /OD and lockup
