David,

I did this awhile back and wound up having the middle brake "innards" fall apart which required replacing the shoes, drum, spring
kit and bearings.

To be safe it would be a good idea to remove all four rear wheels and drums and inspect all of the above on all four rear wheels.

Or you could wait and see what happens down the road, which could range from nothing to loosing your back brakes completely.

I know that's not the answer you wanted to read.

Regards,
Rob M.

I find it very hard to believe that you only have 17,000 original miles. That is only an average of 500 miles per year. That would be great but unlikely.

What is your TZE number?

I will check to see if it was registered in the past with GMCMI. If so. We should have a record of the miles.

I can't begin to tell you how many times that people have said they have a very low mileage on the odometer and I have checked and found that it had, for example, 70,000 miles ten years before. So obviously the odometer turned past 99,999 and started over or a prior owner set the speedometer back (which is very easy to do on a GMC).

Pull all 4 rear drums and take a look. It is a couple of hours to do the job and you will know exactly what problems you may or may not have.

One can not tell what is going on inside the drum, best to pull them off ad see.
I always say, put the parking brake on hard each time, so it becomes ovious that it is on, also the brake light should come on when the handle lifted.
Ckeck the main springs to see that they still have built in tension.

The TZE number is the serial number. All GMC's have a serial number that
begins with TZE.....located under the front right engine"flap" and on your
"papers" for it...

Oh and there is no 'o' in Emery <g> (grin)

David,

The TZE number is the VIN or Vehicle Identification Number.

Facing the GMC lift the passenger side hood and look for an aluminum plate mounted vertically on the fire wall on the far left.

The TZE number is there.

It can also be found on the glove compartment door along with the build list.

It is located on the frame but I can't remember where.

Regards,
Rob M.

Ken B,
Helped out a guy that was not getting fuel.
It was a selector valve. He argued with me, but agreed, now back on the
road with a by passed selector.
I worked last night with Grace, ran back here to rest.
I'm not complaining at all, just have a big smile on my face.
We had a run on several Blue Ox Tow install on SOB's.
Were listed as a stocking dealer, so we get calls along with Vintage Air
units. We will be installin a complete unit in 1970 Firebird that is really
sharp.
We now repair the Onan/Cummins generator for the Cruse America Motor home
rentals.
They dump off severala week.
Were also an Onan/Cummins dealer.

That is great. It is extremely unusual to find something that old with that little miles.

Since it is a Transmode do I assume that you are going to be rebuilding it as a motorhome?

Dave,
Do not let the low miles fool you.
Rubber parts are being attacked by Ozone and the brake hoses will collapse,
replace your fuel pump now as ethanol will weaken the diaphragm.
Get ready to replace all fuel lines(rubber) and solicitor valve.
Your tires, if older than 5 years need to be replaced.
Get me your address so we can send you our parts catalog.

Hello ,

The TZE number is 366V103222

This ( I don't know what to call it ) ? , the Rv, Transmode , bus , mobile office ? Help on that , is in such nice original condition that I am for now going to leave it as a original mobile city hall .

The brakes seem to be working ok now , found the problem on the rolling thump !! Well let's say the 90 % tread on almost the entire tire , except where the wheel locked up and ground down to the nice steel mesh :( only on one side , driver last rear .Will post pic later

Thanks all

And sorry Emery , darn auto spell,

David,

I would suggest you check the manufacture date for the tires on your GMC, you will find it in an oval on the side of the tire.

The first two digits are the week of manufacture (1-52) the second two digits is the year (2013 = 13).

The general consensus of opinion is that it's a good idea to run tires on a GMC seven years then get rid of them.

Rob M.

Rob,

I'd modify that to: "The general consensus of opinion is that it's a good
idea to run tires on a GMC LESS THAN seven years then get rid of them."
I'm uncomfortable after 5 years.

I have seen bad rubber , sidewall cracking , these look soft clean rubber , almost new , id say less then 500 miles on them , if the tires on were kept In a heated garage does that affect longevity or are there other issues ?

Ozone. Hard to hide from it. 5-7 years MAX life. Fiberglass body damage
is almost inevitably $2000+ when a tire blows. Tires are chaper.

David,

That tire was made the last week in November 2007 and by Ken's yardstick should be replaced. I noted seven years but is the one that
failed a precursor to having it happen again?

If one fails and the steel cords come apart you have a cat o' squllion tails whipping around in your wheel well which will make
short work of the wheel well and the surrounding fiberglass.

If you read my Rumspringa Fixed Day 2 email you will see that I just suffered a tire failure on a six year old tire with ZERO miles
on it.

If I were in your shoes I would check all the tires and ANY of them that are the even close to the same age as the one that failed
would be replaced.

I have no experience with 16.5 inch tires AFAIK there's only a few brands around that make that size.

Regards,
Rob
