Trying to find out what works what doesn't for anyone who is upgrading the vehicles.

What items should be just thrown away??

What Brake Pads are best???

Water pump?? original or Flowkooler???

Fan Original is fine or upgrade to electric???

Engine oil is Zinc really problem on the later years 455 77 403 78???

Fuel 455 1977 403 1978 these had been supposedly made for Unleaded fuel so can we assume the valve seats are lead free compatible?

Heater Hose ??? (Replace it all front to back??)

Belts whose are best?

Hoses whose are best?

Timing Chain ?? (Low mileage just do it or wait till 100k)

Rims 16 steel does anyone actually know which ones work and how to find them?

Radiator is the stock on usable for all around travel or Aluminum upgrade is needed?

Air Bags which new ones actually work (if you read online so many different ones but each have problems.)

Brake Booster (Use original or replace it ?? (Vacuum boost needed or not)

Brake Lines (Replace due to age or just based on what they look like)

Brake Pads (Does anyone make better pads or Ceramic pads??)

Fuel Pumps (In Tank, In-Line, Mechanical) Which is best option)

Headlights Upgrade (Truck Light LED anyone try these?)

EFI (What works and does it help mileage?)

Final Drive change (Is this really an upgrade or just something to do)

Ragusa tranny pan (Do people have problems with this as it seems to drop the ground clearance of the tranny)

Engine (Oil pump should this be changed to high cap)

Engine Intake Manifold 455 (RPM Low Profile or Edelbrock (Which is best and why what does it help or not)

Shedding weight (Rims to aluminum, Aluminum intake, Aluminum Radiator, upgrade Roof AC to modern ones, Any other ideas?)

Alternators (77 had 85amp and 78 has 140 should this be upgraded?)

Transmode/uplifted GMC (battery boost is not momentary like GMC motorhome models should this be changed)

Looking to bring these up to todays reliability for almost daily driver

Tires 16 inch (Whose are best and what is experience with costco tires)

Thanks hope people can expand on this or add-on

Gene Fisher has compiled page after page of upgrades, discussions of upgrades and really keeps after it. It is a well done project.

Most of the data he links to is obsolete or not present.

That's why I was hoping people would contribute to generate a new list of what actually works.

John,

With all due respect do you have any idea how much time it would take to respond to all 26 of your questions?

John,

It would be might-nigh impossible to cover all of your topics as a well as
they've already been covered, most repeatedly, here in the fairly recent
past. You can review all of that at:

It is impossible to get agreement on most of these items. Each of us has his/her own ideas as to which is best/needed/notneeded/works/doesn't work. Sometimes I can't even agree with myself!

Unless you are independently wealthy and have nothing but time, I would suggest making a few obvious upgrades (16" wheels and tires) routine maintenance (bearings, a tuneup, and make sure your brakes are in good working order) and then just drive and see what seems inadequate or worn out. Don't worry about the engine until it needs rebuilding. The stock radiator should be fine, but when it needs replacing then think about upgrading and so on.

The stock systems are pretty good considering they were designed 40 years ago. Make sure they are working, then get out, have some fun, don't sweat the small stuff.

George and John,
The correct address is www.gmcmotorhomeinfo.com. The other one, gmcmotorhome.info, is out of date. I don't know why Gene would keep an outdated site up like that. Either take it down, set it to forward to the current site, or copy the current information to it. There's no point in keeping a site with old data around, especially when the address is so close to the correct site.

John,

I asked just about the same question at during the "Ask the Experts" at the Berrian Springs (2006).

The answer that I got then still works today.
"It all depends on what you are going to do with the coach."

Priority goes like this....
First it has to stop.
Then it has to steer.
Then let's see if it goes...

I lucked out. I go a coach that had been scrupulously maintained by a loving PO..... I have since leaned that any thing that is rubber is probably going to fail in the near term.

I suggest that you look at the rubber brake lines. If you see any checking in any of them, replace them all. You will end up flushing the brake fluid. This is good.

Next should be the fuel lines. I know this sounds like part of the "go" line, but fire is a very big issue. Replacing all the rubber lines means dropping the fuel tanks. It is a serious project.

Do those two, then come back for more ideas.
