hello, I'm planing on replacing the engine in our 75 PB, and was wondering how many of the engine front acc I will have to remove ?
by the way, the engine is running in our MOTORHOME we have been using it,
if anybody wants it it will be available, it maybe for free, we did a top end job on it
but compression on all 8 cylinders is around 100 psi. only.......

By any chance when you did the "top end job", did you replace the timing chain and gears? If not, I have seen timing chain get so loose that it jumps a tooth. Compression goes down significantly across the board, but the engine will still run. Best indication is if the ignition timing has suddenly jumped significantly one way or the other. It can happen when starting and you get a hard backfire or at shut-off and you have a lot of run-on. Before you go to all of the work of replacing the motor, you might do a cam timing check. JWID

Is the low compression the only reason you're pulling the engine? If it's running good otherwise and the oil sample is clean, I'd keep driving. That said, I'm only a shade tree engine guy. Others here will give a more authoritative answer.
Why out the top? Having just gone through an out the bottom swap, I got totally filthy. I can't imagine having to cover everything up to the point my interior didn't get trashed during the process.
Yep, take it off....take it all off. BTW, LABEL EVERY FRIGGING BRACKET AND WHERE IT GOES.

Rico,
You have to remove all the accessories of the front of the motor to remove from the coach if you remove from the top or from the bottom. I personally like to remove the engine out the bottom. You need to raise the coach up so the front cross member is 30" off the ground and motor will clear once on the ground. Out the top requires a much larger lifting assembly and you're removing a dirty greasy dripping engine thru you're living area and out the door. Ken Henderson has done out thru bottom LOT'S if times!
See Ken Henderson album listed on Gene's site or direct link:

Show coach up in the air.

Sir: what are the vacuum readings? Oil pressure readings? Is it burning oil? Does it have blowby (oil residue in air filter from valve cover breather). Maybe remove the dist cap and rotate the rotary button and see if it snaps back freely. Also suck on the vacuum line going to dist to see if it advances the timing and holds vacuum. Plug wires are a big culprit for low power. If they will shock you with it running they need replaced. Best thing to do is pull a couple of oz of oil and have it analyzed. Maybe try to borrow a leak down testor as it will tell the condition of the rings. I agree that 100 psi across the board is on the low side of OK. Did you have the butterflies in carb blocked open? Did you do a wet (1oz of oil squirted in the cyl) also to compare?

Perfect Cad Candidate!!Towing a Jeep..... You would need a lot of interior cover and the hoist/Iron I beams built up in there and then it all has to come out the door or remove
a side window. most of the accessories can go back on the Caddy.Mostly the same price just WAY more torque to get movin. If you build up that OLDS it could cost even more.

If you have a 23' coach and a 'stinger' style engine lift, you can lift the engine out the door. Alls you gotta do is remove the pax seat, and then drape everything on the right side anmd the center. After looking at my 26',. I think it will come out the bottom when the time comes. Unlike my 23.

Or not depending on the wear. My 56K mile 403 was within factory spec on cylinder diameter. I don't even think John went with .001 oversize rings.

when we did the heads, I checked the cylinders for "ridge around the top" and they didn't have any, I just cleaned the dust ring and it was totally smooth, (the engine is still in our GMC)
the very odd issue is that all cylinders are the same PSI, it doesn't smoke, no burn oil, idles great, no backfires, no averheats and have double check the timing and tried it at different settings, changed the distributor, carburetor rebuilt and works great, but when I take off with it, it feels as if I was starting in 3rd gear, I have also manually shifted the trans ..1,2,3, no change on torque............

Parking brake dragging? If you jack up the bogies, the wheels should spin easily by hand.
I had my brake knob set too tight once and it felt as you describe.

We just finished installing Disk Brakes on all rears,
checked the wheel bearing, added grease, 4 Air Bags installed, (no parking brake yet)....it runs good on the freeway.......no problem cruising or keeping up.............but with a small bridge or hill is a whole different story......
