What is special about the Onan Muffler? Is there a reason that I can not just use a similar sized unit from say a tractor? I can get one that is close for less then 30 bucks. in fact bought one a couple of years ago at princess auto for 10. use it on my mini sounds good.

the one that is on the gen has a couple of holes and is a bit on the louder side. At some point a PO has also used "flexible" pipe from the manifold to the muffler. might have to go get it cut off.

Adam, I have seen some do it. My down pipe was rusted so I just bought the complete unit from one of our vendors. I don't have the tools to fix up a system like many do so am thankful to our vendors for having them. You might look in the photo album or search this site. Seems like this came up a few months back.

Nothing special. If you can work out the plumbing and mounting then you can use any old side-entry muffler such as that intended for a smallish farm tractor.

Adam,
I got a side entry tractor muffler from TSC and rigged it up to test how loud it was.. it was not very quiet! Took it back and got one from an RV store and it was much better.

Give Dan Stuckey a call, he sells a stainless steel muffler for the Onan, not sure of the cost though. 519-eight four four- 20 eight three.

He is in Ontario so no customs issues.

G'day,

The outlet tube from the exhaust manifold is a weird size, can't remember what it is.

You'd better go look at the Parts Book to see how the exhaust manifold is made BEFORE you cut anything off!

Should you find a stock unit that seem to work, let us know.
We are always finding new sources and parts that will work that will not be
so expensive.
Dan Stucky and I are working on a SS muffler, hope to see if they can do it
at competitive price.

Several years ago I bought a stainless steel muffler from one of the GMC suppliers (not Jim) in Florida. It was way too loud for my taste and they refused to allow me to return it. I found a muffler on Ebay meant for a tractor and got it cheap. It had the same size fittings. The only modification I had to make was a bracket to hold it on the Onan. It was much quieter than the stainless steel one I now have sitting in my attic. So the bottom line is you can use one for a tractor muffler for your Onan IMHO.

Jim K sells Onan mufflers for $75 plus $20 shipping. That works out to be less than local purchase for me.

I will update my page with current prices... It is definitely better to buy
the JimK version. When I did this, it was 1/3 the price of any
commercially available alternative.
