Does anyone have a picture of a bad governor gear? I think the gear
went out on the Stretch as I too only have 1st gear. Thanks.

It is just a plastic gear with a few teeth chipped off of it.

Gary,
I might have gone thru the same problem with my tranny recently. The
governor gear may still be intact, mine was. You can possibly verify that
the gear is still intact if you start out in drive, the tranny stays in
first gear, so pull the gear lever to super, and the tranny shifts to second
or super, then move the lever to drive and when the speed gets up it will
shift into drive. I drove from Newport Beach to San Diego doing that. If
this works, then Manny says to pull the governor, and clean out the bore of
the inner shaft, and reinstall the governor. Everything then will work
normally.
If you have headers, you will have to pull the left one, then the governor
is accessible, three bolts and it is out. A lot easier if you remove the
left wheel and fender liner.
With the governor out, inspect the gear at the bottom, then take the cap
off, you have to move the fly weights in to the center. Then the inner
shaft will slide out and you can clean it. Manny says to clean the bore
with a wire brush. Assemble it and see if it works OK.
Regards,
Gene 76 Eleganza North County San Diego

A statistically significant number of Onans have experienced failures in their field assembly over the past several years.

It is almost trivial to check your field using a regular volt-ohm-meter on Rx1 scale by taking the bridge out and stick the ohmmeter leads where the bridge's + and - terminals were and hope you read 36-38 ohms.

If you read infinity ohms then you have a bad field assembly.

Just be careful changing out the gear in the tranny governor. you do not want to bend anything in the head of the governor.

it is a simple task. pop off the retainer. twist and pull out the governor. drill out the pin holding the gear in. and pull out gear. my new gear went into governor really tight. but if you just need to press or tap it in with out putting any force on what is inside the head of the governor.

I think you can reach in where the governor was to spin the speedo. otherwise the cable is easy enough to remove to check if it spins freely.

to verify it is the governor gear for the shifting. swap governors between two GMC's that you have out there in the desert. if they do not have headers, it can be swapped in less then a minute. really easy.

the only other thing, is why it gave out. I would say chances are high that it was old plastic. But make sure the speedometer cable turns freely. I understand a stuck speedometer cable can take out that plastic gear.

for what it is worth, my GMC last year had the gear strip out. replacement gear got me my gears back.

Talked to manny. The first one was a bad vacuum line to the modulator. 2nd on thought I was getting lucky cause speedo was working so I pulled governor but gear was good. Trails ring miss Jaime to Mannys Saturday for a replacement and try to talk him out of a pair of used axles.
