I have been having a problem with my Tracker which started at Dothan. After it warmed up it started to buck and misfire. It ran fine when cool. After I got home it progressively got worse. I assumed it was ignition but I couldn't find the problem. I finally took it to a garage. They found the problem. The throttle position sensor was acting up when hot (part cost $340). They also found that the air flow sensor was testing bad (part cost $90). The total bill was $838. $300 for labor and $518 for parts and tax, $20 fuel for test driving.
Apparently the TPS affects a lot of things on that model. From 1995-1998 they used the expensive TPS. I was also having trouble starting the engine with a key. I had assumed that it was the neutral safety switch so at Dothan I rigged up a push button switch which worked well. However, after installing the new TPS the key starter switch now works well again. Years prior to 1996 use a much less expensive TPS.
That was a lot of money for the repairs but it now runs well and I will be able to use it for a toad again.

Damn, and I have a 1996 Sidekick with 46,000+ miles. So at what mileage
will I have these problems??

Perhaps you never will unless you start using it more. Mine had 184,000 miles on it.

That's been the biggest drawback to owning our '03 Tracker. Replacement part costs. Shortly after we bought it, the IAC failed while Kathy was driving between Phoenix and Tucson. There was a traffic tie up on I-10 and every time she stopped, the engine would die. I explained, over the phone, how to 'brake torque' it and she got it home. I had the IAC replaced and IIRC, it cost over $350.00 for the part.
The only other problem we've had was with the evap system. It turned out that the charcoal canister, under the car near the gas tank, was cracked and leaking. I believe that part cost over $200.00.
Of course these were list prices, as most shops charge. If I had bought the parts and installed them myself, I'm sure they would have been cheaper.

Jerry, our 97 Sidekick didn't start having misc intermittent problems
until over 200k.
Yours is but a babe, so far.

Steve, if you're buying Miata parts from a Nissan dealer you're gonna get stung. Try a Mazda dealer :):)
(You'll still get stung, but the pieces will fit). I buy pretty much all my smog parts off eBay The exception being the MAF on an '05 or newer Ford Ranger (Engine without an EGR system). It wants the specific Furd part to operate correctly..

That's one expensive TPS. Is it still a 3 wire pot? I know that Wells is going to replacement Hall effect TPS sensors that should not wear out. On the other hand that air flow is pretty cheap. At least they solved it.

It is not just a pot, there is
another circuit set in it that controls other things on the
engine. They only did this for 96-98. Earlier ones were only
a normal pot.
I checked eBay but there weren't any
listed. Autozone and Advance Auto wanted
$380 but my mechanic in Longmont found one in Denver for
$320.
He had the car for three weeks before getting it working. I
am sure that he put more than $300 of time into it but he is
a fellow GMC owner and took pity on me.
