Today we left Gordon & Lucie Seykora's place in Nanaimo, BC and moved to
Victoria. Because Saturday night is when they have the big fireworks
spectacular at Butchart Gardens, we wanted to be there. We checked into a
campground 10 miles from the gardens and departed immediately to see the
gardens.

About half way there, the PS pump began to howl. I had a fresh quart of
fluid aboard, so we were under way again quickly, but not for long. The
howl quickly returned. Parked at the gardens, I quickly found the
problem: blown pitman shaft seal.

I drove back to the RV park with little difficulty since above 15 mph or
so, I barely missed the boost. While there are other options, the one that
most appeals to me at the moment is to get on the ferry back to Port
Angeles when we finish our sightseeing here. From there, it's only 72
miles to the Seattle ferry terminal at Bainbridge Island. I can get the
box rebuilt there more easily than anywhere short of there.

Question is, will the pump stand up to that long a trip with no fluid? I
don't mind replacing the pump too, but I don't want to wind up disabled
before I can do so.

Any experience?

Ken H

remove the ps belt, and drive on the combiner and the generator ?(no ps or
alternate)

do not remember if this is your serpentine belt system, or not.

good luck

Ken,

You said "above 15 mph or so, I barely missed the boost. "

Is it feasible to loop the inlet of the pump to the outlet?

You obviously don't need it for the windshield wipers! ;-)

Rob M.

Could you not just loop the hose on the pump? Pour it full and clamp the input to the output?

Ken,

While I intellectually like the other ideas better, you might try getting a roll of teflon thread tape and making a ball around the the shaft to be a temporary seal. The body of the steering box is supposed to only be at the pressure required to return the fluid to the reservoir, so it might not take much to get nearly all of it to go back - at least for seventy-odd miles.

I don't thing that the pump will last that long without the cooling that the fluid does for it.

Good Luck Guy

Matt

Rob, Johnny, Matt,

Turns out (I guess that should be "oot", considering my location), my
serpentine belt for the PS drives only that and the A/C, so I'll remove it
for the long drive. Potential problem avoided.

Sully's going to order me a rebuilt box from one of his suppliers known by
local GMCers to be reliable; should be there by the time I am.

Jim,

We're planning to be there well before the10:30, but with no reservation,
who knows when we'll get aboard.

Sorry to say, I forgot you live here. If you're in the ferry area, I'd
like to meet you.

Hello Ken

I have to bring my wife in for an 1100 Clipper sailing. She needs to be there just after 1000 so I will look for you in the vicinity of the Coho.

Good. Not that you're likely to have much trouble telling which coach to
approach, but we'll be in the yellow 23'. :-)
